View Full Version : "A couple of new races next year..."

IndyCar hinting that talks ARE taking place to add 2 races to next years schedule...and "would not be disappointed if they were Road America and ?"...I forget the 2nd as was so shocked to hear Road America! Ought to have a 2nd Milwaukee...that was one of the best races those guys have put on in a VERY long time. That and this one at Mid-Ohio...Took 'em 15 years to "shatter" the lap record there:rolleyes: but it was also a VERY good race...fast, safe, excellent drives by numerous guys...Boy, if one LIVES long enough it's amazing what may be seen! You know, like a 3rd generation AMERICAN winning...and closing in on a title? Two events left, an oval and a road course...Kinda like a wet dream for the Indy faithful?...Hope the RA event, if it happens, teams with World Challenge.

Rumor is that Milwaukee is toast. Will Fontana and Pocono return? NOLA gone? They might be treading water, at best.

At this point I just don't think there are enough people to care. When I remember, or interested, to watch a race they are entertaining but I just can't get excited about them. Road America is a must if you are interested at rebuilding the brand, but it might be too little too late. I would go to RA if it were a little closer.

Yeah, that "crowd" at Milwaukee was shameful...my comment was on the race itself. Maybe the other one was Phoenix? Treading water sounds about right but the racing now being produced is better than I have seen from that group...maybe ever. I really like this whole new crop of young guys coming along, too. They need more than 12-15 in that Lights series, though... to help things improve. I REALLY approve of the "Super Atlantic";) Dallara/Mazda they are using and I just force myself to NOT recall:tony:...And the war...sort of a fan do-over. (headed up to the TUSCC this Friday...you?)

I have an idea. Rather than referring to the series as the Earl, the .1RL, or some other variation, let's just call it what it is:

The Walking Dead

I'll be up at RA with one of the g's., probably get there Thursday, leave on Sunday.

Any track that would have them as anything other than a facility rental client would have to be insane. Even then, they'd better require a 100%, non-refundable deposit to be paid 6 months in advance.

This article from Racer (http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/119868-indycar-big-changes-coming-to-2016-schedule) suggests that NOLA is toast and Andretti Sports Marketing is allegedly shutting down. If that's true, what about Toronto? Didn't Mikey's group promote that?

Ed_Severson

Road America is done -- June 26th. NOLA is gone (thank God). Milwaukee will stay, but will not be promoted by Andretti. Toronto is back in its normal spot on the schedule and will be a doubleheader again. Fontana will stay, Pocono might not. I'd guess Phoenix will be added, but not Homestead and certainly not Richmond. Mexico City in February would be great, but is probably unrealistic for 2016 given that it's only 6 months away.

RA is DONE!? As in "done DEAL" or as in TOAST?:D Good, June 26th...who gets to buddy-up with them? Only been to IndyCar twice since splitsville...Milwaukee and Indy road course...watch on TV maybe half the time, but Road America? I'll be there. Anxious to see how close they get to a 1:39 lap (Dario, 2000) The French clan from Sheboygan do 1:47s in those F-1 Benneton/Judd V-10s.....Oooo, that SOUND!

Gosh, I remember that Phoenix track design. Who was it who designed it? All I remember was talking to him one day when CART was planning that race. Quite nice on the phone, as I remember.

Minneapolis had a short-lived street race, headlined by Trans Am, on possibly the worst track ever designed.

I'm surprised they haven't tried that again, especially with Target HQ here.

Sucky layout before 9/11 but definitely wouldn't work now. I work in the building on Barclay & Church so I'm down there 5 days a week (worked south of the WTC site since 1999 until a little over a year ago). There wasn't enough room for a race pre-9/11 and everything is a lot more restricted now. Too many permanent barricades for light formula cars to deal with. Lots of constructions on narrow mainly one-way streets (West street is a two-way street). Where would the spectators sit? Although the WTC site is slowly being opened to the public as it is completed, it is never going to be an open plaza, open air area again. There is really no place on that route grandstands could be erected. I won't even mention the pits.

Maybe they need to try the Weehawken route F1 was going to use.

If there's one thing this thread confirms, it's that street circuits are generally terrible. JoeBob, I am surprised that Target hasn't pushed for something here, but maybe even they are smart enough to not waste money on a street festival. If anyone wanted to do something in the Twin Cities, I would push them to the plethora of private and general aviation airports.

What they fail to mention is that, while there may be a couple of new races next year, they'll be replacing races that have bailed. NOLA looks to be a one and done. Pocono will probably not be back unless they get a massive boost in attendance this year. Milwaukee is toast.

So? Ok...as an RA, & TRUE:D race fan, I'll happily trade 2 of any of those others for a weekend at RA with IndyCar, Indy Lites, Pro Mazda, F2000, Pirelli World Challenge, along with picnic tables and out-houses! All those pretty track layouts and comments above are cute but they do not exist! All I see is 500+ acres of green rolling Wisconsin countryside, a GREAT track and a boatload of good racing. Four day ticket is $100 (for awhile) and that looks pretty good along side the $70 ONE DAY prices they get now for major events...I look forward to being there...the only thing I worry about is if a charge for paddock access is added someday. That is half or MORE of the weekend fun and entertainment at RA...getting up close and PERSONAL!:D Now, if those damn guys that buy $300 photo passes stay out of my way, I'll be REALLY:) happy!

What's the RA date? Too lazy to go looking. 2016 has been declared "Sports Year" in the Travel household ( Fih hunnert and Cooperstown). I figure we'd better hotfoot it to RA also because it might be our only chance in this lifetime if it goes one and done or whole series goes "toes" up.

I'm not sure how they'd prevent paddock access, without buying a LOT of fencing.

Me and the g. always go up there at night, to see who's having a ***ty weekend. This year it was pretty quiet, except for the Ferraris.

The g. got to learn how to swear in Italian over at the Risi garage. :D

If you go to Cooperstown, let me know when and we might be able to hook up. I thought long and hard about a trip out there this year, but chickened out on the 6 hour drive alone. :(

Boston...

http://indycarboston.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/course.jpg

Certainly need to new pavement and other upgrades to some of these roads... cross a railroad track again. Not the worst street course I have seen, but needs some work.. If they stick to the track it has some interesting bits, including underpasses, and even a bit that goes underground and comes out under the middle of a hotel.

Final round on Labor day... I'm a New Englander and will be there.

Cypher Street looks like a set from 'The Walking Dead'.

There's a police station on the Massport Haul Road.

Turns 7 & 8 go through a hotel. Through it. I guess noise won't be an issue.

It's right next to Logan airport, so the restricted airspace will prevent helicopters providing overhead camera angles.
I don't know if the on-board cameras on the cars need a helicopter to relay their signals to the TV trucks.

I say do it. :tony:
