the republican movement in aus and nz just took a step back another 30 years. i don't think i've ever seen such a positive reaction from people i knowon both sides of the ditch.

It would be ironic to call the baby Anne. The 2nd of May was the day that Anne Boelyn was incarcerated in the Tower of London

Out of curiosity, how strong is that movement?

One of the funnier captions on a post on a political blog I saw here was "couple on the dole have another kid".

Trying to not get political, here goes:

15 years ago when the Diana scandal was at its highest, vocal but minority status. There was a failed referendum in 1999. To make a change to the Australian Constitution you need a double majority (i.e. 50%+1 vote across the whole nation and also a majority in a majority of states-so 4 out of 6 states must in their own vote pass it). It failed on both tests by about 55% nationally and similar in most states.

Since then, the royals have experienced huge popularity increases. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry (who is currently on secondment to the Australian Army) are very popular amongst the young and the old. Baby Boomers are probably the least likely to favour the monarch but Queen Elizabeth is pretty much universally respected. There is a small but noisy minority (mostly media leftie types) who like to bag them and they had a field day when The Prince of Edinburgh (i.e. the Queen's husband) was made a Knight of Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours. That wasn't an unusual thing to do, his son The Prince of Wales already is one and both Canada and New Zealand gave him similar honours recently. I actually thought I was one of the few young people happy to keep the status quo but my social media contacts across the whole political spectrum are all interested in the birth and naming of the new Princess Charlotte.

The other thing about them is they're the cheapest heads of state we could possibly have. There was a study done that one US Presidential holiday costs more than an entire year of the entire Royal family. We only pay when they come to visit and given they usually have maybe 1 or 2 security guards, tops, even that's cheap! They normally stay in the house of the Governor-General or the State Governor during their visits too.

Welcome to the world Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. I picked the first two but I had gone with Victoria for the second middle name. I figured that any reference to Diana in her name would mean that the media would be on the poor girls case her entire life.

The name Charlotte has a long use in British royalty. Queen Charlotte was King George III's wife. His daughter was Charlotte, Princess Royal. King George IV's first born daughter was also a Princess Charlotte. Charlotte is also her Aunt's middle name and is the feminine version of Charles.

Elizabeth is obviously a reference to her Great Grandmother but also is the middle name of the Duchess and also the name of the Queen Mother.

Diana is a reference to her Grandmother.

She will no matter what, so what the heck, might as well give her the name if you were otherwise inclined to.

PS, thanks for the explanation.
