Volcano erupts in Papua New Guinea (http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/29/world/asia/papua-new-guinea-volcano/index.html?hpt=hp_t2)

The volcano spewed a thick tower of ash that reached as high as 60,000 feet above sea level.

Gotta admit, from a photographer's point of view, that's there's some awful pretty light.

So you have a 8 x 14 km wide caldera ringed by active cones. What is cool is two of the cones are sometimes fed by the same deep structure so that they can erupt in unison. By cones I mean essentially small mountains, Tavurvur (220 m, 730 ft) and Vulcan (243 m, 797 ft). This time only Tavurvur erupted but they went in unison in 1937, 1994 and 2006. Which is pretty amazing when you consider that they are on opposite sides of the bay/caldera.

The blast that created the caldera in its current form happened 1400 years ago and was one of the largest volcanos of the past several thousand years.
