70 years ago today thousands of men we will never know sacrificed everything in order that millions of people they would never meet could live in freedom. To them, and their memory I say a heartfelt 'Thank you'. You have paid the highest price one can pay for freedom and liberty. We should all honour their sacrifice by remaining constantly vigilant against any threats to those liberties that were gained at such a high cost. We are forever in your debt.

I couldn't agree more. I just wrote my first letter to the editor of the LA Times. Not ONE WORD about D-Day on their front page today. Not a word! I was INCENSED!!! I told them to tell their advertisers I chucked the whole thing in the trash because that's what I thought of it.

My father was a WW2 veteran and my mother lost a brother in September of 1944 in combat in Luxembourg. They truly were the greatest generation.

Grounded by staff at his care home, Bernard Jordan faced missing out on an emotional return to the D-Day beaches.

So, summoning up the spirit and determination of June 6, 1944, he hatched a cunning plan to join his old comrades in honouring the fallen.

With his medals hidden under his coat, the 89-year-old told his carers he was off for a walk. Instead he boarded a coach for France.
