Anyone else in Rossi's position would not have had to worry about their lack of results, they would have been dropped two years ago.

No one but Casey Stoner was able to win on the '08-'10 Ducati and even he had increasing difficulty and finally left having seen the writing on the wall. It had to be an incredibly humbling experience for Rossi to go winless for two years at Ducati Corse. And a big portion of that humble pie has to be served up to Jeremy Burgess too. Especially after his infamous "We could fix the Ducati's problems in 80 seconds" comment during Casey's struggles.

While time may have arguably passed the doctor by, he is still clearly the 4th best motorcycle racer on the planet. And if he feels changing crew chiefs will bring him the additional few tenths he needs to mix it up with the three spaniards, then his 9 world titles buy him that privilege. I personally think it takes enormous courage to make this change as it puts himself squarely in the crosshairs for next years results. And his comments clearly reflect his acceptance of that possibility. Some of Rossi's best qualities are he LOVES to race and win, he never gives up and he has always been a class act. He is pretty damn smart and very self aware so most see this coming season as his final reckoning. If he can't return consistently to the top step of the podium and be a factor in the championship, most predict that he will call it a day for his riding career. His new for next year Moto3 team should keep him involved in the sport for years to come. Which is a very fortunate thing for the sport.

Rossi has never been the same since his 2010 accident. He got on to the Ducati after that which sucked and I think it just ruined all of his momentum. He is still one of if not the greatest rider in history, but his time may have passed unfortunately.

I always maintained that Rossi the hardest working and Stoner the most gifted motorcyclists. Rossi may still be the hardest worker but Marquez is even better than Stoner.
