Pippa Mann, who takes over the second Dale Coyne Racing entry this weekend, caught a seam and crashed heavily into the wall on her seventh lap; her badly damaged car eventually spinning to a stop on the track's apron.

Later, Takuma Sato did almost exactly the same thing, and with more or less identical results. Both drivers were checked and cleared by IndyCar's medical team.

No Viso due to "food poisoning" or "currency investigations," depending on what story you believe.

Big wreck
Wilson, Vautier, Simona, Newgarden

Wilson out of car on stretcher, being loaded into ambulance.
Justin Wilson is awake, alert and being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. We've not been told what is being evaluated.

JW update. Had catscan, all back looked okay on this scan. Small fracture to pelvis. Will have MRI next to check back further. 62 lat G’s!

Allmendinger has been seen and released from the infield care center.

Crash ...
Well, Munoz had a nice night until that. Was he 3rd when he crashed?

Pippa and Saavedra crash. Unrelated. But they both crash.

I’m doing ok. I'm told 3 fractures to the pelvis and so far they believe no surgery needed.

I sort of thought that from the beginning of the race, having been there in the days of the Zanardi/Vasser duel.

Speaking of late, I don't know how you folks on the Eastern time zone do it (besides DVR, that is). I decided I wanted to know if Dixon could pull it off so I looked and it was actually covered on Bright House basic cable in Tampa. So, I started watching. Geeeeez. I finally gave up and lost about 40 laps around 11:30 PM. The last of it was pretty cool though, the stunning (not in a good way) pictures by SurfaceUnits notwithstanding.

Loved Power's reaction to finally getting that race under his belt. It's the most fire I've ever seen from him. Edit: I mean in a good way, not in the double finger salute way. ;)

Brickmans sez less peeps than last year, Defender sez way more then last year. Draw your own conclusion.

IMS should spend another $1.2M to BCG to find out why FontUcky sucks...they'd take it.

There's a few in the sections under the suites. Officially it was 8000, I think somebody tacked on a zero*. Certainly they would have been better off financially NOT paying for parking lot attendants, concession workers and liability. I wonder if they can get better terms on these track rentals if they just drop the gate and make it strictly a TV event.

*The place seats 84,000, that would be one in ten seats being used. Not even close.

How does that shot equate to 3 pelvic fractures? The t-bone was in the rt ft wheel/footbox area? Does this make sense?

To me, it looks like the t-bone happened higher up in the car, more towards the space between the wheel and sidepod.

To be fair (and I'm in no way implying that they had a huge crowd for the race), but I think those pics might be from the Friday night practice session. Notice the number of cars in pit lane and the number of people standing in pit lane without fire suits.

OK - so I tried to find a video clip of the stands from the race. Forget that for the moment.

What is the deal with these Youtube videos? And there are a crapload of them...over and over and over. With different user names. But all the same IRL video promos.

Justin Wilson's car tub broke during crash

It was only later that Wilson understood what had happened, why he had blood running down his hand from a small cut and what caused the damage to his Dale Coyne Racing Honda.

"The whole side of the car, it broke," Wilson said. "The tub was broken, right where the steering wheel is, in line with where the steering wheel is, vertically, all the way down the tub and then the same behind the seat, so that whole section is caved in.".........

"Fortunately the tub is very strong, but I still think there are lessons we can learn from it," he said. "When another car hits you, that was always the point of the old cars, the big sidepods, on the Champ Cars, the old Indy car, the big sidepods that came past the cockpit, they would crumple. But on this car, we don't really have it. It hit right between.

"It would be nice if we had big sidepods again. I'm not saying it would have fixed that problem, but I think it would have helped. I'm fortunate that the tub is so strong, it stood up to that hit."

Reminds me of all those Cleveland Indians double-headers I used to go to when I was a kid in the late 60s. IIRC, 10K was a decent crowd. BTW, this was in old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The upper deck would be so empty that bored kids would go and "write" not nice things about the Tribe by folding down seats. The stadium ushers would "erase" these as soon as they were noticed. The nicer ones would say things like, "Indians Suck." Can't print the others.

Get your numbers straight... That place (my "home track") seats 92,000.

The reason(s) it looks vacant are:

1) they only seat people in sections 1-52 (even numbers West of s/f, odd numbers East)

and

2) the product is so bad that very few actually pay for a ticket. People who have upper grandstand season seats are given GA seats for Indycar.. That says ~45,000 freebies are available and track management figures maybe 30,000 will attend in total.

Also, attendance numbers were bolstered by a "Hot Import Nights" event in the West end of the Fan Zone. There were maybe 20,000 in the house for the start, and we watched hundreds leave during the first 50 laps.

Yeah, I was there (and actually stayed for the entire race this time). The product was improved over last year (I left after half way last year), but I won't be back next year even if they GAVE me tickets (date change to Labor Day weekend and 110 degree heat). :shakehead:

Manic, you forgot to mention the Groupons. Some ridiculously low price for grandstand seating and paddock passes. I nearly bought one but can't seem to get myself up to going to an IRK race. "Maybe next year" is my mantra. I was actually thinking a night race might be kinda nice out there.

SEC filing says 81,000 (http://yahoo.brand.edgar-online.com/displayfilinginfo.aspx?FilingID=9033371-40740-51721&type=sect&dcn=0000051548-13-000009)

That number was correct after the first expansion (from 72,000 to 81,000 seats), and I'm speculating that the SEC filing was made when Penske "sold" the track to ISC. Since that time, Fontucky added seats in turn 4 and increased capacity to 92,000.
