Mercedes has today revealed in a video on YouTube the sound of next season’s V6 turbocharged engine which will be introduced as part of the new regulations for 2014.

The recording was taken from a development engine, accompanying a lap of the legendary Monza circuit which will pose the greatest challenge to the new power units.

The downsize in engines (from V8 to V6) is part of the sport’s bid to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

I'll wait for the real thing to make up my mind. Watching a tv broadcast, I doubt it will make a lick of difference.

Love turbos, hate the RPM limit being 15k. Haaaate.

They say max fuel flow limit is reached at 10.5K so 15K isn't really necessary

Completely agree. They have a lifetime requirement, let them build it to have the best performance they can get. They should allow engine development unimpeded for a period. Then lock it in for a few years to save some costs. They need some type of compromise to allow them to push the boundaries mechanically.

Bleh. Next year may be the one where I stop watching. They do seem intent on killing it, don't they?

I mean, they should be able to look at other series around the world and realize that they are descending into spec territory. If that is the case, why allow years of a slide into mediocrity happen? Why not just make it a spec engine, but use the modern equivalent of the 1970's 1200+ HP turbo engine? Surely that could be produced economically now, and it would be fabulous to watch.

The 2 sound clips (Merc and Ray) sound like the engine is bogged down.

:yuck:

It sounds to me like my blender is about to explode. I rarely watch so it won't affect me but it reminds me of the first time I heard a DW12 vs that beautiful turbo sound I was so used to. ugh. :p

Don't forget, they will probably go through 3-4 new iterations before the lights go out in Melbourne*.
