I stumbled upon that in the last month, too late to see it at the Cleveland International Film Fest which was, or course, months ago.
You are from Clev. west side, right? By the way, at the same time someone pointed out to me that the back cover of "The Essential Calvin and Hobbes" is a drawing of Calvin destroying Chagrin Falls Godzilla like. And he has in his hands the iconic Popcorn Shop.

It has been said that once upon a time, Mr. Watterson would walk into the Fireside Book Shop unannounced and autograph copies of his books, but stopped the practice when they started appearing on eBay.
I always look when I go there. I've never found one.
In an unrelated note, I used to be a west sider; I'm on the east side now.

I read an article a couple or so years ago that hinted he had moved so, being a real estate attorney and knowing what data bases are available, did a search and he now lives close to the Coventry District in CH (amazingly he apparently didn't pay an attorney to tell him how to keep people like me from figuring out where he lives).

I can't believe it has been 18 years since he "retired". Yes it is amazing the impact he has had on our culture. For example all my kids are into C&H and the oldest was 2 years old when he stopped publishing. There used to be multiple C&H books that lived in the backseat of our car that they read whenever we went anywhere. No wonder they are all so well adjusted. :gomer:
The magnitude of the void left by this cartoon's absence can only be realized when compared to the inadequacy of today's comics to fill it.
Axe Cop? Seriously, WTF? At least, a T-Rex in an F-14 made sense.

Too funny, so the next showing is in Chagrin Falls:
http://www.dearmrwatterson.com/DMW/dearmrwatterson.html
So I went and saw the film last Thursday. I liked it.
As a bonus the guy who made the film was there to answer questions which was kind of interesting, if for no other reason this guy never talked to or met any of the Wattersons, yet it appeared a decent number of people at the showing knew some or all of them (mom, dad and Bill), if nothing more then in passing, which just had to kill the film maker, who basically admitted he wouldn't know them to see them (he relayed that after doing some "man on the street" interviews that a few days later he was told that one of the groups he talked to included his mother, who didn't say a word).
Another part I found hilarious was an interview with Berke Breathed where he talks about corresponding with Bill Watterson, among other things. Of course Watterson famously refused to merchandise characters whereas Breathed was the exact opposite. So Breathed shared a letter from Watterson where at the bottom Bill Watterson had drawn a picture of Breathed stuffing dollar bills into his speedboat (see below). Too f-en funny.
And for people from the Cleveland area or familiar with Chagrin Falls there was an unintentionally funny part of the film where someone is showing and describing the back drawing of Chagrin Falls on The Essential Calvin and Hobbes that I mention above, and pasted below, and at the very end of his description says "and who knows what is suppose to be burning". The crowd burst out laughing since the day before at the exact location in the drawing a place called Jekyll's Kitchen (http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/10/jekylls_destroyed_by_fire_owne.html) had a big fire.

Emmo just turned 10yo and outright refuses to read a thing - unless under duress. His grades are great, read comprehension is excellent. He just won't pick up a book.
So last week he finished up a book and asked if he could get another in the series. I jumped up and off we went to Barnes and Noble. Found his book and headed to the register. On the way, we passed an endcap with all sorts of Calvin and Hobbes book on sale. I started paging thru and reading off a few. He picked up another and started laughing and laughing and laughing. We bought one with the promise of more. He hasn't put it down yet.

C & H is written in such a way that it will likely wear very well over time. It really isn't tied to the period it was written in such a way that 20 or 40 years down the line someone wouldn't get the humor or the points it is making.

"We consume everything like potato chips now," he read, eating another potato chip.
JR: How has the digital era and social media freed cartoon artists?
BW: Anyone can publish now, and there are no restrictions of taste, approach, or subject matter. The gatekeepers are gone, so the prospect for new and different voices is exciting. Or at least it will be if anyone reads them. And it will be even more exciting if anyone pays for them. It's hard to charge admission without a gate.

Bill Watterson Calvin and Hobbes "The Last Sunday" Print Signed dated 12-31-95 (Universal Press Syndicate, 1995). This full-color print of the very last Calvin and Hobbes strip still catches us short and brings a tear to the eye. It was a masterful way to go out... full of hope and excitement and energy. But we knew we were losing two of our dearest friends that day. The 13.75" x 10" print is hand-signed by Watterson in the last panel. In Excellent condition.
