I've got some old games that won't run on XP or 2000 and I need to put an old box to use to play them. If anyone wants to sell one cheap (with the code, natch) please contact me offline.

They don't have the three I want to run, Warcraft II, 688i and Mig Alley... :(

Sorry, I only have a copy of Windows Me. It's a special edition "signed" by Gates. :D

They won't even work with the Windows 95 compatibility mode in XP?

Stroke, I should have both 95 and 98 in my collection. PM me and I can send one your way. I've recently reviewed the 'inventory' due to other issues. :irked:

Okay, this is depressing. In Step 1 of the following, WHERE and HOW do you right click on Windows XP? I've searched my Program Files and can't find it. It's not on the desktop. What do I do?

Using the Windows Program Compatibility mode
When you use Windows Program Compatibility mode, many of the most common issues that prohibit earlier versions of programs from working correctly are resolved. If you run a program and it does not function as expected, it is recommended that you run the program in one of the compatibility environments. To run programs in Windows Program Compatibility mode in Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps: 1. Right click on the link of the program that you want to fix.
2.Click on Properties.
3.Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:◦Windows 95
◦Windows 98
◦Windows NT 4
◦Windows 2000

5.Under Display settings, click to select the mode that you think that is necessary for the program to work correctly: ◦Run in 256 colors.
◦Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
◦Disable visual themes.

6.Click Apply, and then click OK.
7.Double click on the program.

1. Right click on the link of the program that you want to fix.

This refers to the link that you use to start the program (ie. your game). It may be on the desktop (as a shortcut) or on the XP Start Menu (lower left corner of the Taskbar) or you might have to go to the All Programs item on the Start Menu.

That may be the solution! When I tried that with 688i I got an error message that a "Graphic failed to load" but it looked like it wanted to run.

Also, you can try Googling the name of your game plus windows xp, like:

"warcraft II" "windows xp"

There are likely other people who have wanted to and figured out how to get it to run. There also may be a patch from the publisher. Just keep away from cracks/crackz. They may or may not be safe.
