View Full Version : Boom?

Two MAJOR landings at Van Nuys airport about 15 minutes ago. Circled a bit and flew in right over the house. Search of images leads to me think F 14's, not 15's or 16's. Jeebers, maybe Gnam was right and we're about to go boom.

I was under the impression all the swing-wing planes (F-14 and F-111) have been retired. I'm guessing it was F-15's.

Unless it was Tornados?

I thought so too, stroker. I'll look. The F15 undercarriage pictures I saw did not look right but closer than the 14's and 16's.

While we're here, what is the difference in capability? Described in layman's terms, of course.

edit: dam google images shows you everything that flies. I called the airport but it's after hours so no human answered. Nothing on the news or the net that I can find about why they're here. Odd that they would stop at a commercial (civilian) airport. RE-EDIT: The lack of reliability of the images is probably what got me even more confused between the 'teens.

F-16 is single engine, f-15 & f-18 are twin engined.

F-22s?

Of those, still think F15. Gotta call a local restaurant that overlooks the airfield. Maybe they know.
Edit: It would help if I hadn't been so astonished when they flew over. AND if I could tell more about these babies to distinguish them. Seen online: "U.S. F/A-18 Warplanes Sent To Philippines For Military Drills" Yippee.

The Air Force lifted the F-22 grounding order today but there's no way they are flying f-22s to a civilian airport today.

The airshows have all been canceled.

Yes, the sequester cancelled the airshows as of April 1. I'm still stumped. Repositioning? With jets? Doesn't seem likely. Unless they took off way to the south (more quietly than they came in), there are here overnight.

edit: Looking at seems to be actual photos of F-22's, it's definitely not them. Wings are too "roundish" to put it in technical terms.

The British are coming! The British are coming!

The RAF have phased out the F3 ADV variant (replaced by the Typhoon) and only use the GR4. Can't see the RAF sending a couple of mud movers to California....

Nothing to worry about...it's just the North Koreans invading. Just means that you need to keep your dogs inside. :gomer: :D

Did you wave? ;) Having growned up in Kettering, I've been used to all kinds of aircraft flying around Wright Pat, where my mom worked for a time.

Word on the web is that they are here for a high school career day. Will leave about 2 pm so I have another 90 minutes before I run outside!

Thanks the heads up (literally). I thought everything was cancelled when I read that the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds have cancelled everything. They are usually the big draw.
