Wishing for 19 Alonso DNF's in a row.

I suspect he'll be WDC, but I don't have to enjoy it. :D

I can't wait; I'm practically giddy. I think Vettel, Webber, Button, Kimi, and Soulpatch all have legit shots at the title.

Next offseason it will really be crazy with the rule changes (if they happen).

Soulpatch?

I believe he is referring to the driver of one of the red cars.

No I think he means Louise with her attempt at a Gangsta beard

Oh no. I remember how stupid the announcers became every year when the four races ran on Fox . From the sound of this, every race will be broadcast that way. " Now there's a Ferarri, based in Italy, founded by Enzo." " There's pit lane where they work on the cars"

P3 started dry but it rained a few minutes in... some teams got fully dry laps in. Some didn't.

Qualifying will be delayed until the hour before the race not shown live during the MLS game...

It looks like this weekend is turning into a Saturday night short-track event. Any driver who damages their car in qualifying will be behind the eight ball and hated by their crew.

Glad I haven't looked at Twitter tonight. If you're following umpteen dozen f1 feeds you can only just turn Twitter off if you want the suspense.

No spoilers here for those watching this afternoon.

Great to have F1 back and this was a good race. I was worried after the qualifying drama (a little rain is good; nobody needs a monsoon). Cars are still ugly, but better looking than last year. Gonna be an interesting season. I just grateful that I get a respite from NASCAR. Gosh, it has come to this! :shakehead

The start of the F1 season still does (even after all these years) remind me how much I miss CART and how sad and pathetic the American racing scene is now. But since we're on NBC Universal Sports yada yada now, I get to see those IRL commericals and I'm snapped back into reality really fast.

Speaking of NBC Sports Universal yada...

...Steve Matchett drove me nuts with his, "if you're new to Formula one..." Does he really think that anybody up at 2:00 am watching that race would be new to F1? Yeah, I know they're hoping to catch NASCARites who can't stand Bristol or something, but that isn't likely and it was very annoying. I know he & Hobbs did this on Speed, it just seemed odd here. Don't know why.

Don't know if I missed Bob Varsha or not. I loved him for years (his commentary of a Road America CART race with Danny Sullivan was one of the best ever...I'll never forget his burning bridges comment about Robby Gordon), but lately he has been a tick annoying. Maybe it's just me?

Oh well,
Mary

It's not just you.

cameraman
03-17-13, 01:21 PM
You will have next week to figure it out. Varsha will be pinch hitting for Leigh Diffey as he leads the IndyCar coverage. It seems Varsha will sub for Diffey every weekend that F1 and IndyCar run on the same day.

Another new to F1 coverage is the side by side video during most of the commercials. Also there is a half hour post race show on directly after the race. They rehash the race and Buxton grabs some quick interviews with various non-podium drivers.

03-17-13, 01:40 PM
I was pleasantly surprised by the side by side, although it's about the size of a large post-it note on my television screen.

Goddamn Leigh Diffey makes me want to put turn off the volume and put on the friggin subtitles. He's almost as annoying as Derek Daly.

WickerBill

Worst thing about the broadcast, by far, was hearing Varsha will be doing next weekend's race. F minus.

Insomniac
03-18-13, 09:01 PM
So how about the race? Was this something different or is it simply good night once Vettel is out front? I assume Alonso only leapt past Sutil and Vettel because Vettel wasn't trying to pass Sutil. Although with a Ferrari in front, Vettel found the gas pedal again. :)

cameraman
03-18-13, 09:45 PM
Well it clearly wasn't good night because Vettel shredded his tires within 3 laps and Alonso had caught him by lap 6 which is when Vettel had to come in. Also Vettel was stuck behind Sutil with Vettel on new mediums and Sutil on mediums with 10 more laps on them.

Malaysia is an entirely different surface and much hotter. Who knows what will happen on Friday.

Assuming these are correct, Button was basically 1 second slower this year than last. How do you explain that if you're Team McLaren? Are they sacrificing raw speed for tire longevity?

No. The car just sucks. Button & Perez had terrible tire life. They have totally redone the front suspension and it simply doesn't work.

I saw some rumblings they may go back to last year's car after the next race, if they can't figure it out.

You'll note Vettel was a second slower, too.

Diffey didn't seem to bother me on the F1 broadcast. I guess cause he can't use his favorite "star" word, since it's not a sports car race where somebody is a former "star" of another series. Great race. What I would really like to see? Id love to see them kick out one of the guys and get somebody in the booth who's actually raced or driven these cars in the past ten years, like they've always done on Sky or the BBC. That would really liven things up. Even Cheever, who I like on broadcasts, would be great. Townsend Bell was great when he guested on a couple of races.

John, ignoring the fact you're high as a kite, I would also note that there aren't many drivers who live in the US and have driven those cars in the last decade and are willing to sit in a studio at 3am...

Like I begged for when the NBC switch was made, just rebroadcast the Sky / BBC feed please!!

I think Bourdais would be interesting. Someone who got chewed up and spit out, might bring a little hate to the table. ;)

Good call on all 3... I went with American only....

McNish could be interesting but he still drives and is probably busy, I can't imagine the other two being very exciting commentators....
