Bono? That would certainly shake things up. I like the idea. :D

The growth of the Catholic church has largely come in the undeveloped world so I expect there will be (again) talk and pressure to take someone from Africa or South/Central America or Islands. Cardinal Turkson would be the first black Pope. He is at 3/1 but I imagine some folks would rather see Bono Pope, if you know what mean. The still haven't got used to a black president. Enough said about that.

But the Church is struggling to hold its numbers in Europe and US so I expect to hear a push for that. An American Pope would certainly grab a lot of attention even outside the church and could be quite popular.

Either way the church has moved much more conservative of late. That has probably hurt them in the US and Europe, so it will be interesting to see if the new Pope continues that trend.

Father Dougal Mcguire from 'Father Ted' at 1000:1.

Also, Vice President Joe Biden has taken himself out of the running. ;)

Not to mention at the next Grammy’s he can really one up Paul McCartney or Elton John when they are introduced as “Sir” with “Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God, Bono”

Father Dougal Mcguire from 'Father Ted' at 1000:1

I figured that he must have been some kind of joke candidate as well and it never occurred to me that it may have been that show.

I notice Cardinal Mahoney (Mahorny?) isn't on the list. (You may need to be from LA to get that.)

When does Mel Kiper do a mock papal draft?

Re: the lightening. Anyone else think of Back to Future? If they trade in the Popemobile for a DeLorean, we might be getting somewhere.

All I can say is that the 25 Roman Catholics in the Falklands were really surprised.
