This is a great blog post on hurricane Sandy which is hanging out over Cuba at the moment. It turns out that no one is quite sure where this storm is heading and this blog looks at the hows and whys of the indecision.
It's a little dense but if you are into weather or live on the Jersey shore you might want to take a look.

The weather models have had no clue on anything this past year. They have been all over the map (literally). This could be the Perfect Storm or a big dud. :saywhat: The forecasted track for Isaac was WAY off. :irked: The models just can't compute the abnormal weather we've had this year (and I refuse to call it global warming or climate change...it's a cycle). :shakehead

Updates we are getting via the emergency management channels indicate an increasingly likelihood of a strike in the area - possibly heading up Delaware Bay. The quickly follows with a comment that the models, well, they look like this as of this AM:

According to the latest updated from TWC, the GFS has it curving left further north, but the European has it striking further south b/w NYC and AC. :saywhat:

No. Too little, too late. :\ I'm more concerned with the potential for roof damage having survived Ike. Add that on top of the damage caused by a car hitting the house, and attorney bills. Perfect storm. :(
UPDATE: GFS is now moving the hit further south to around NYC. :eek:

For most of the year Ohio has been in draught or near draught condition, but just in the last few days or weeks we have gone over our normal rainfall for the year, so basically the rain was down when we needed it and up when we don't.

Nappy, NW oHIo was in a severe drought, which has receded recently, but still dry. Farmers will still need the rain for winter crops, but too much too soon will be a HUGE problem with the dry soil. 8+ inches forecasted for the NJ/NYC area.

Requests from the local FD about extra marine rescue units, generators selling out quickly (co-worker down the hall trying vainly to find one :rolleyes:), sounds like grocery stores are busy too.

According to most recent modeling Frenchtown is ground zero for this storm.
Last year the only winter storm we had was just before Halloween which knocked a bunch of power out because the leaves were still on the trees.
Maybe next year we will have locusts.
It looks like I may miss the whole thing though as I will be in Orrvile OH all next week.

You do know you are flying into a state that statistician Nate Silver at the 538 blog, now hosted by the NYT, rates this morning as having a 49.8 % chance of determining the outcome of the presidential election (the state with the next highest rating is at 9.9%) in the last 11 days of a presidential campaign? You will be lucky if you do not take a baseball bat to a TV while an ad is playing before the week is out (the campaigns and pacs have been giving the phrase “carpet bombing” a bad name) and have at least one of Obama, Romney, Ryan and Biden (both Mr and Mrs of each) squeegee your windows clean at a stop light or offering to do your laundry while asking for your vote. Maybe one of them will buy you a donut. You have no idea of what real silliness looks like.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you had some problems even getting a room with, I understand, in some places many taken by O&G field workers and with the large number of out of state campaign workers now flooding into the area, though NEOhio has plenty of rooms so maybe there is no issue. Akron isn’t all that far from Orville after all.

Reports this AM have landfall a little further south on the coast. Or not.
A local, private (i.e. non-TV) meteorologist who's been pretty spot-on w/ hurricanes and winter storms is pretty convinced it'll be a DelMarVa hit. Rain doesn't appear to be a huge threat down here, but winds could be. That's what killed us during Irene last year and the utility companies have done ZERO to lessen the potential for downed lines. :irked:

My neighbor saw it necessary to to post on Facebook that she and her husband got out of bed last night at 10:30 to go buy four gallons of milk for a storm that won't be here until next week.
My wife is starting to turn in little circles mumbling something about AA batteries and pasta.
Ohio will seem calm by comparison (but it should be interesting to be in election ground zero). I'm glad I turned in my absentee ballot weeks ago.

It official. The woman at Walmart just told me I bought the last D batteries in the county (other Walmarts already sold out)... Which considering we are actually pretty normal way out here means they are likely the last in the state.
Given that my wife couldn't tell me why we needed the batteries I should sell them tonight for a mortgage payment.
BTW also bought the last Parmalot and box of powdered milk, again not that we really needthembut the wife thinks so.

What do you mix the powdered milk with if the electricity goes down to the water pump stations and you have no water?
By the way, that reminds me, a few years ago when there was that massive east coast/Canada/Midwest power outage my now ex had the presence of mind to run right home and fill some buckets of water so at least we had some if necessary, including to flush the toilets with. We were one of the first ones with water back on but for some it was something like 3 or 4 days.

Getting ga$ was a HUGE issue here after the 29-June 'land hurricane'. Pumps were out for days and power was out for more than a week in spots nearby. My advice to folks in Dulles: get ga$.
Make meals in advance. Fortunately we're all natural gas, so I have an alternative. Was thinking about the smoker this weekend, but the temps and wind may postpone that plan. :(

No kidding. It's bad enough here- I stopped on the way home and saw 2 stations getting the poles out to change prices. I understand suburban DC is getting even crazier than usual.
On the plus side, I've had local news on for 45 minutes and not one election story yet, so there's that.
I've gotta fill the tank tomorrow. Hopefully the prices are in line with what I paid about a week ago.

And people wonder why Californians stick it out even with the threat of major earthquakes. You guys endure mass hysteria in anticipation and days/weeks of soggy clean up. We endure an unannounced 1-2 minutes of HOLY CR@P and then (admittedly) weeks/months of dry clean up. At least it's neat.

Neighbors all test running their generators this PM. They all laughed at me 5 years ago when I bought mine. I feed 3 houses (just for sump pumps) the one year. I said they could plug in, but the minute I lost power for what I need I was kicking them off the grid.

Of course I'm getting scads of "we're closed" emails from vendors today. To inject a bit of levity, I'll quote the one I liked the best. From an NYC booking agent, Beyond Times Square, "We urge everyone to take the necessary precautions (flashlights, batteries, radio, wine, cheese and corkscrew). Please use common sense and be safe."
I'm hoping the East Coasters affected by this will chime in more than usual so we'll all know you're okay.

Seriously? "Sail AROUND the storm"!? Heck, I know people who wouldn't even DRIVE to St. Petersburg at about the time the Bounty set sail. Were they trying to film storm scenes or something? If some kind of documentary is made from this, they better donate ALL proceeds to the Coast Guard! From anything I saw on TV last week the only way they were going to sail AROUND this storm was to head straight for ENGLAND first! My guess is they just didn't want this beauty battered to pieces in port so the were trying to save it by putting to sea? That's what the Navy did, but my guess is the Bounty was quite a bit slower and not quite as seaworthy. Unfortunate for sure, but avoidable I think.

I'm OK, but I drove all day to a Hilton in Wooster, OH. :)
Trevor and family still have power at this hour and are figuring how to keep water out of the garage.
Me? I'm loving the new (to me) 325i. The wife totaled the Acura TL in August and this is my upgrade. Despite driving rain the whole way west it is a joy. :D

Not a count but there were probably more cherry pickers headed east than anything else.

Glad you're OK! [Thread hijack]Wooster--no kidding!? I have family there (as well as Rittman, Smithville, and Orrville).
My sister in NJ reported that the storm went through her town with a lot of rain and wind, but no power failure. Then it got quiet, until an hour ago, when the wind started howling again. We now understand the meaning of "eye of the storm."

If NY Governor Cuomo is serious about preventing another storm surge from flooding the city, maybe they'll build a barrier across the harbor entrance similar to the one London built across the Thames.

For a lot of locals Seaside Heights is the armpit of "Down the Shore" full of drunks not from Jersey (Bennies, as they are known ). This debacle might actually qualify as urban renewal or creative destruction.

Finally home. We never lost power - just a few flickers. Amazing as most other places are without and will be for some time. Kiddies off tomorrow (that's day #3 in a row if you are counting. :saywhat:)
Home front - not a shingle out of place. Nothing. I need to check again to be sure. Crazy - but very happy.
Many with minor damage. Some with major. Nothing on the scale of the shore or NYC. Video from there is astounding. :(

Homefront slept in the basement last night because a neighbor has a huge pine that we expect to tumble on our house in just about every storm. It didn't.
Another tree fell on his shed though. And another neighbor lost the roof to their sunroom. Another had a tree uproot and take a chunk of their attic. Lots of limbs down all over the place and most folks lost power. But not Frenchtown. :thumbup:
I need to be in Houston next week. Now I just have to figure out how to get there from here (via NJ or not).

We were pounded pretty good here in northeast Ohio, with lots of power out. Looks like we had it easy though compared to you farther to the east of us. I hope the worst is now over for everyone and you get going on cleaning up this mess. :thumbup:
