The mens cycling was one of the best races all season. Nobody helped the Brits and a 31 rider breakaway made it to the final segment when Rigoberto Uran & Alexandre Vinokourov went away. The rest of the break didn't respond and then Vino got a jump on Uran at 500m.

The remining break sprinted and Alexander Kristoff beat Taylor Phinney at the line for bronze.

You would be seriously rich had you bet on Vinokourov for the gold...

Fabian Cancellara missed a curve and crashed. Finished but is currently at the medical center getting x-rays. Possibly re-broke collarbone...

Some moron waving a flag spiked Bernie Eisel into the ground at about 10k in. Ya know those carbon fiber shards that they are always going on about in the F1 races. The is the cycling equivalent.

I don't get it. NBC seems to be showing less this go-around. They shut down all the channels except the main NBC to show the primetime tape delay stuff. I guess I get it, they're trying to make some cash, but I want options, dammit!

Replays might be ok, haven't tried streaming yet.

Needs more underpants volleyball.

CTV has been a godsend for those along the Canadian border.

Also, NBC removed a tribute to terrorism victims (http://deadspin.com/5929778/) from the broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies. (I guess they think the US audience is a bunch of dunderheads that can't appreciate subtlety.)

What cameraman said. Tons of live stuff way early in the am. Costas and Lauer damn near destroyed the opening ceremonies with their constant yapping. Danny Boyle did a brilliant job, best opening ceremony I can remember, even if NBC did edit out a section remembering the victims of the London bombing so they could show a pre-taped interview with Brian Phelps. Didn't stop Costas from giving his opinion about the decision not to mention the Munich tragedies though....oh wait, have they come back from commercials yet

We're watching tons of it. Glued to the tube these two weeks. Takes a real toll on my eyeballs. Even tape the evening show though that tapers off as the week progresses. We can get through those 4 hours in about 2 with all the fast forwarding.

Real pity about the omitted segment though. It was obvious something was missing on the NBC broadcast. At least they kept the moment of silence for those lost in the "great war."

It's a recognised sport. I'm guessing there has never been a major push for Olympic inclusion because outside of the few lead Commonwealth countries and the Netherlands it's not exactly popular. But then again the same could be said for Baseball and Softball and they lasted quite a while...

Great race. 9 laps up the same hill is brutal but fun to watch. Best race I've seen since Le Mans. It was also cool to see all the footage of the English countryside and then London. It was like one of those PBS specials where they fly around in a helicopter. And to top it off the "old guy" from Kazakhstan won. Great Success!

They changed the format a couple of years back. The swimming, fencing and showjumping give a pointscore that give handicaps in a cross country run/shooting style event similar to the biathlon. Now the winner is first over the line rather than working out a complicated pointscore like in the old days

Gymnastics coverage is *always* like that. They're catering to, shall we say, a different viewing audience than they would for the NFL or nearly any other sport, and that audience laps up the human element (e.g. pain and suffering, watching someone who has never failed in their life fail on the biggest stage so we can watch them melt down on camera) more than they do the actual scoring, athlete-vs-athlete stuff. Agree, I hate it, but it brings huge ratings, so they do it.

With love, your Kiwi cousin. RIP Cam.

Bloody hobbit, I have been waiting to see you pop up. :)

One gold maybe as good as it gets.... :gomer:

Absolutely gutsy effort from Erin Densham in the Women's Triathlon this morning. I'll let my facebook status take up the story:

It's my job to have lots of words but frankly I have few to describe the emotional London 2012 Women's Triathlon tonight. Erin Densham had heart surgery three years ago. It nearly ended her career. Then when things were looking up, a significant hip injury got in the way and it again nearly ended her career. New coach, new setup and 2012 beckons. A podium in the Oceania championships in Devonport
was a bit of a sign but fast forward to the Mooloolaba World Cup in March and she dominated. In every single aspect of the race she was unbeatable. Three weeks later she backed that up in the Sydney World Championship Series race, dominating once again. At both races, Erin said to me that she didn't think she'd get selected for the Olympic team. Then Triathlon Australia changed the goalposts. Again, and again. So Erin (who had planned to be back in training for the games) had to extend her peak and race the San Diego World Championship Series round in which she finished second. Finally TA announced her selection for the team and today she lined up for her second Olympics, this time as the form athlete, one of the favourites and she delivered the goods. Every attack was caused by Erin and she eliminated all but the two who would eventually get the better of her in the final sprint. A bronze medal by less than 2 seconds is just brilliant. What a remarkable girl!

We had a small gathering of about 50 club member in the function room of one of our sponsors. That bronze medal might as well have been a gold. Erin is truly amazing.

Gotta say, I like Team USA's strategy today in basketball: "Keep missing three-pointers? We'll keep jacking 'em up anyway! (The let Lebron bail our rears out.)":gomer::shakehead

More to it than that. Lithuania exposed holes in the USA D with the pick and roll and made it a layup fest. However, USA had a 23-9 TO advantage to bail their arses out. I still think the lack of bigs and inconsistent outside shooting will cost this team. Nigeria was an anomaly. I foresee a Greece '04 finish to this bunch. :irked: USA gotta play better D. Hopefully this was just a hangover from the Nigeria beat down. And whatup with the 61% FT shooting? :saywhat: :shakehead

BTW, due to the lack of bigs, when teams sag inside like today, they've gotta jack it from outside. And Kobe w/6 pts.? Gotta do better than that, yo.

That too, and I'm amazed how many pros just seemed lost defending a simple concept like pick and roll. If you took UNDER 69% shooting for LTU, you lost.:eek:

BTW: Kobe's shot selection was atrocious, IMHO.

Funny that neither singles gold medal match was particularly competitive.

I get Serena winning big because she's been on a roll. Murray not so much, especially since he just got his ass handed to him by Feds in the Wimby final. The crowd was definitely in his favor, tho.

I hear the Aussies are considering changing their strip from green and gold to green and bronze, or maybe just green...:D

Perhaps. Feds is getting to be an old man in the tennis universe.

That was one ugly basketbrawl b/w USA/ARG. Melo gets punched in the nuts after hitting a 3 late in the 3rd. Lots of other thugism by ARG as well. I thought Coach K was going to go Bobby Knight on the refs. If these two meet up in the medal round, watch out.
