It's sort of like music - different songs are good for different reasons.
Ernest Borgnine was good for a lot of different reasons and can be appreciated as such. Whether it was McHale's Navy, Airwolf, or his secret to long life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I_PeLNzxNQ), they were all things that made him great.

I was pleasantly surprised to see him turn up in the movie RED a while back. I think I'd just figured that he had passed away at some point. The guy got his full money's worth from the ride.

If you haven't seen "Marty", rent it. He won the best actor academy award and it was well deserved. I also liked him in that old Allisar McClain story "Ice Station Zebra". He was also good as a general in the "Dirty Dozen". He could do it all.
