I just heard someone saying the other day that his performance in A Face in the Crowd, a movie I have never seen, it a classic performance.

A comedy it ain't. Very good movie though.

The first time I heard, "What it was, was football," I nearly died laughing. Gasping for breath. Many years later, there have been so many knock off's, it doesn't have quite the impact it once did but it still brings a chuckle. This is probably the full length, original version but I had to look away from the pictures. Much funnier in my own imagination.

Andy was thought of mostly as Matlock but he was a brilliant guy. In performance and business. Drama and comedy. He was smart enough to be the executive producer of Mayberry RFD from its beginning in the 1960's and, of course, Matlock. RIP, Andy

Andy Griffith trivia that I heard a few years back. Carl Kassel, National Public Radio’s new announcer on Morning Edition for 30 years (semi-retired in 2009 to only score keep on NPR’s Wait, Wait) had Griffiths as his high school drama teacher way back in the day, and Griffiths wanted him to go into theater.

Just saw this elsewhere, Turner Classic Movies has Face in the Crowd scheduled 1:45am Friday morning (I guess its part of a slate of movies by guest programer Spike Lee).

A quiet genius, and definitely Americana.

Where will we get our homespun wisdom now?

Re: what it was was football. We had that on a 45 rpm single and I found it endlessly amusing at about 9.

Thanks, Steve. I'm blubbering all over my keyboard now. Guess I'd better get outside and join TravelGuy so he's not a waitin' on me.
