I'm just starting to think about this summer's Olympics and realize that NBC and BBC have both announced live streaming of everything. I might actually get to see an entire event--of my choice, no less.

Here's my problem. When we switched from an ancient TV to a widescreen, we bought an LG. I loved it. It was everything I ever wanted. We hooked up the internet and the reception went straight down the dumper. Sound cut off and stations went blank at random *while we were using the cable box only.* Time Warner Digital Rebuild they call it. I've spoken to others in this area who had exactly the same experience. Of course TW never heard of such a thing and neither has LG.

There was no way to undo the downloads that had caused the problem so we returned the LG and got a Samsung, which is acceptable but not great. We didn't want to chance another issue so we never hooked it up to the net. Just the cable box.

So, the question is, have any of you had this problem or do you know of this problem? If so, how did you fix it? We're missing so much by keeping ourselves in the cave of cable but it seems to the only choice.

What type of connection do you have from the cable box to your TV?

Connecting your TV to the interwebs shouldn't affect your cable reception but if you're using HDMI there can be compatibility issues. If you saw a change in reception after an update to your TV that may be why - the HDMI drivers were updated.

Note that this doesn't mean it's the TV maker's fault. It's just as likely that Time Warner or your cable box manufacturer are doing something out of spec. Of course they'll never admit it.

Did you connect the Internet to the TV or the cable box?

I am inclined to agree with nrc that you had an HDMI incompatibility between your TWC box and the TV. The only reason connecting your TV to the internet would have triggered it is because that allowed LG to update the firmware on your TV. You should have seen a prompt asking you to allow the update.

My LG 47LE5300 is connected and has updated several times in the 1.5 years I have owned it. No problems with HDMI handshakes but I have DirecTV.

If you had come here (or to AVSforum suggested by SteveH) for advice before replacing the LG, a solution might have been found. Most likely by replacing the HDMI connection with component HD video. It's also possible that TWC or LG have since "fixed" the compatibility problem.

In any case, I wouldn't hesitate to internet connect the Samsung to get your Olympics stream. If you are still paranoid, don't allow any updates ;)

I'll have to double check all this with TravelGuy. All your comments sound right on the mark to me. He's sick at the moment so it may be a day or two til further facts are in evidence.

Thanks for suggesting that I should have come here first. It was a year ago and quite the struggle. HONESTLY I try not to ask every question I have. I don't want to wear out my welcome, technically speaking.

And so begins the rabbit hole...I finally gave up AVSForum. Just too difficult to keep up with everything and have a life. :(
