Starting off with track changes in response to Perez's shunt last year.

Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix in May, the Automobile Club de Monaco has announced that following consultation with FIA Technical Director Charlie Whiting, it will make a number of changes to the circuit in a bid to improve safety.

Following the 2011 race, Whiting made a number of requests and the circuit today announced that it will implement the changes. Chief among the modifications is that in the wake of Sergio Pérez’s accident at the Noevelle Chicane following a loss of control on the exit of the tunnel, a laser study of the road surface in the area was undertaken.

“A laser study of the road surface was undertaken by a specialist company, leading to a planing of the road from the tunnel to the chicane by up to 20cm at certain points. This removed a bump and corrected some banking,” circuit chiefs said in a statement. In addition, the impact point of the chicane will be moved back by 14.6 metres. The pit lane exit will also be widened from 10m to 20m so that cars can return to the track at much greater speed.

The track surface at the exit of the escape lane and the Mirabeau escape lane has been replaced with an abrasive braking surface, as used on the Paul Ricard HTIT circuit. Meanwhile, the tyre barriers previously placed at the St Devote corner and around the Swimming Pool S-bend will be been replaced by the latest generation of TecPro barriers.

Ooh, you have to love karma piling it on. So Maldonado get a ten grid spot penalty for clouting Perez and then after qualifying his gearbox is declared doa and he get gets another 5 spots added on. He starts 24th.

Could anyone politely explain to me why the Pointy-Chinned-One kept bragging about getting pole position in Monaco? Surely he knew his position on the grid would be altered by a penalty... right?

Not withstanding a grid penalty, I think he was properly elated at having posted the fastest lap time at a circuit that requires more driver skill and depends less on aerodynamics than any other venue F1 competes at.

As he should be. I kept wondering if it was something psychological to keep him pumped for the race, to focus on having earned pole position even if he didn't get to actually start from the pole.
