...that Driven was the #1 movie the week of April 29, 2001?:rofl: Mike & Mike mentioned this while talking about Knicks playoff win yesterday--their first since that date.

What a mess!

Yikes, I had no idea. Imagine how bad all the other movies that it went up against had to be. Just waiting for the bluray version to come out..... :D

In the last year I ran into that movie on a Spanish language channel where it had been overdubbed. It actually was better that way, and I don't speak Spanish.

My wife and I went to it that first week. One of our rare date nights

At the end she politely said, "That was pretty good".

I let her off the hook by telling how much it sucked. I actually didn't expect too much, but was totally shocked at how bad it was. I don't think even Stallone has ever made another movie half as bad. I was shocked it didn't go straight to DVR and that they spent the money to distribute and promote it.

Actually, as it turns out, Driven might be one of his best movies. :D

For that weekend:

1) Driven
2) Bridget Jones's Diary
3) Spy Kids
4) Along Came a Spider
5) Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles
6) Blow

It was the most successful "new" film of that weekend. Nos. 2-6 were in at least their second week of release.

When you get right down to it, he really did make some stinkers. :DThat was entirely my point.

More, if you think about it, about half or more of his films use essentially the same Rambo kick evil ass plot with different settings and scripts. Then there are something like 8 Rocky movies all with the same underdog hero plot. Throw in a few odd ball movies.

And then there is Driven.

I have never been so disappointed with a film in all my life, though it is fun to watch it from time to time just to see the people I know and marvel at how goofy they looked in 2001.

I recall reading in the past that the week a studio chooses to release a movie is something that is really thought hard about. If you have a dog movie you try and release it at a time of the year when movie attendance tends to be down so the good films that a studio may have to release are not being released at that time of the year, and you then pick a week when hopefully basically nothing else is being released. That may be what they did.

By the way that link shows its budget as $94,000,000. With only $12,000,000 the first week there is no way it did not end up in the hole.

As per IMDB:

Box Office
Budget: $72,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: $12,174,504 (USA) (29 April 2001) (2905 Screens)
Gross: $32,616,869 (USA) (8 July 2001)

By the way, that is only something like $188,000,000 short of the Avengers US opening weekend.

If you account for inflation the Avengers opening turns into $120,000,000 so it was only 10 times the Driven opening:gomer:

The opening weekend ended up @ $207m. It's already passed $500m worldwide. As a friend of mine on this board noted, John Carter who? ;)

Budget of $94,000,000? How the hell did they spend that much? I mean, that is a freaking mountain of blow.

And the royalties/residuals for cable/TV showing.

That's got to be a ton. :gomer:
