Ed Carpenter Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan, Sam Schmidt Motorsports and Newman/Haas Racing each have one car with no assigned driver.

Hmmm

Hmmm

ECR is likely Buddy Rice, Rahal is either Jourdain or Filipi. Schmidt is Townsend Bell (who's been great on TV) and N-H, if it happens (skeptical), is Jean Alesi.

All these teams are saying they are committed to run the 500, however none of them have a contracts to get engines. It will all come down to Cheby and Fonda to supply the rest of the backmarkers. Lotus cannot hardly give their teams a good working engine and who knows if they can ever make it to the full season with their parent Co. in deep financial trouble:gomer::gomer::tony:

You mean the *official* deathtrap of the IRL? It was condemned long BEFORE Wheldon got gratered. Just think, if they got out of Las Vegas with just severe burns, broken backs, severed thoracic arteries, wrist fractures or compound femur fractures with simple unexplained wheel to wheel airbourne contact they might have been able to go back.

Michael Shank Racing on Wednesday released driver Jay Howard from his Indianapolis 500 contract because the team does not have an engine.

"We are working every possible opportunity to make this happen and continue to hold our entry for the Indianapolis 500," Shank said. "But at this point, we've not made the progress that we need to in terms of having our package finalized and having an agreement with a motor manufacturer.

"I know firsthand how hard it is to have the opportunity to race in the Indianapolis 500, and the last thing in the world I want to do is to hold Jay back from getting the chance to do that."

It's the other way around. Honda has 15 entries, Chevy 14. Sounds like Lotus is committing to 4, so a 34th entry will have to come from a 15th Chevy -- that may hinge on how the final turbo hearing turns out later this week.

They sell each engine lease at a loss, and they don't have an infinite supply of trackside personnel. Both of them want to limit the scope of their programs this year so they don't bleed cash, and so they don't stretch themselves thin enough that they screw up their chances of winning.

Can't blame 'em for that.

''We will have a 33, but, honestly, if we didn't, I think we need to focus on the quality, not on the quantity,'' said Tony Kanaan. ''I believe that with the economy right now, it's been remarkable how many cars we've already got, and it's just a number. You start 33 cars, I know it's tradition this and that, but in the first lap you have a five-car accident, you're already down to 27 cars, so what's the deal? I'm not concerned, I understand that the haters might criticize us for that, but I think we'll be OK.''
