The twitterverse is reporting that the North Korean satellite has achieved a permanent position at the bottom of the Philippine Sea.

That would be an unusually low altitude geosynchronous orbit.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — The press bus took a wrong turn Thursday. And suddenly, everything changed in the official showcase of North Korean achievement.
A cloud of brown dust swirled down deeply potholed streets, past concrete apartment buildings crumbling at the edges. Old people trudged along the sidewalk, some with handmade backpacks crafted from canvas bags. Two men in wheelchairs waited at a bus stop. There were stores with no lights, and side roads so battered they were more dirt than pavement.
"Perhaps this is an incorrect road?" mumbled one of the North Korean minders, well-dressed government officials who restrict reporters to meticulously staged presentations that inevitably center on praise for the three generations of Kim family who have ruled this country since 1948.
So as cameras madly clicked, the drivers quickly backed up the three buses in the narrow streets and headed toward the intended destination: a spotlessly clean, brightly-lit, extensively marbled and nearly empty building that preserves digital music recordings and makes DVDs.
The foreign journalists, invited into North Korea as it commemorates the centennial of founder Kim Il Sung's birth, arrived at the Hana Music Information Center, where a guide told them second-generation leader Kim Jong Il made one of his last public appearances there before his December death.
"I hope that the journalists present here report only the absolute truth," said Ri Jinju, her voice trembling, her hair frozen with hairspray. "The truth about how much our people miss our comrade Kim Jong Il, and how strong the unity is between the people and leadership, who are vigorously carrying out the leaders' instructions to build a great, prosperous and powerful nation."

Sad. :shakehead

Next up: an apparent nuke test, which may include a Uranium device this time. :saywhat:

I'm amused as anyone at the North Korean satellite launch failures. However, I must remind those of you too young to remember that our early launch attempts failed 8 out of 11 times.

The Vanguard rocket launched three satellites out of eleven launch attempts:

Vanguard TV3 - December 6, 1957 - Failed to orbit 1.36 kg (3 lb) satellite
Vanguard TV3 Backup - February 5, 1958 - Failed to orbit 1.36 kg (3 lb) satellite
Vanguard 1 - March 17, 1958 - Orbited 1.47 kg (3.25 lb) satellite
Vanguard TV5 - April 28, 1958 - Failed to orbit 9.98 kg (22 lb) satellite
Vanguard SLV 1 - May 27, 1958 - Failed to orbit 9.98 kg (22 lb) satellite
Vanguard SLV 2 - June 26, 1958 - Failed to orbit 9.98 kg (22 lb) satellite
Vanguard SLV 3 - September 26, 1958 - Failed to orbit 9.98 kg (22 lb) satellite
Vanguard 2 - February 17, 1959 - Orbited 10.8 kg (23.7 lb) satellite
Vanguard SLV 5 - April 13, 1959 - Failed to orbit 10.3 kg (22 lb 11 oz) satellite
Vanguard SLV 6 - June 22, 1959 - Failed to orbit 10.3 kg (22 lb 11 oz) satellite
Vanguard 3 - September 18, 1959 - Orbited 22.7 kg (50 lb) satellite

And we had all of those hot shot Germans working on our program.

The issue is not putting a satellite into orbit, but rather using the 'stated' purpose as a guise for the 'perceived real' purpose, which is to test a long-range missile capable of reaching the US. Add that to the fact that they are testing nukes, and we've got a problem...especially with the hair-brained leadership they have.

Not passing judgement of the N Korea deal - but over the past couple years, I've seen an increase in the planning for response to a nuke. The Feds, for one, are taking the possibility of someone popping off a nuke pretty seriously. It was something that seemed ignored for many years.

In the last few weeks, I've received copies of 3 copies of different emergency response plans for response to nuke events. These aren't fear-mongering or defense industry claptrap - but serious contingency planning. The first was a 300 page plan for Ventura County and most recent a plan for a 10kT (see someone is using that metric system ;)) device on the mall in DC.

In 2010, I received the Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation text. The participating agencies included: DHS, DOD, DOE, EPA, NASA, Red Cross, USNRC.

Captain Nemo.....Kelsey Grammer
Mr. Land.....Phil Hartman
Professor.....Mike Myers
First Mate.....Rob Schneider

Mr. Land: So now we're really 20,000 leagues under the sea?

Captain Nemo: Well, actually, no, that's a bit of a misnomer. I misspoke. A league is actually a measure of distance traveled, and not a measure of depth, you see.

Mr. Land:But, Captain, we're so deep! Surely, we must be 20,000 leagues under the sea by now!

First Mate: Yesss. 20,000 leaguesss! Under the sea!

Captain Nemo: Well, no. As I said before, I misspoke, you see. I should have said.. fathoms. Fathoms are what you use to measure depth! Fathoms, not leagues!

Professor: And so, we are 20,000 fathoms under the sea?

Captain Nemo: Yes. But, I mean.. I mean no. No. We could be. But right now, we're just about, uh.. 200 fathoms beneath the sea.

Mr. Land: Oh, I get it. So 200 fathoms equals 20,000 leagues under the sea?

Captain Nemo: No! No! now, look, I was obviously wrong to have ever even mentioned 20,000 leagues nder the sea. I simply meant that we would traveling a total distance of 20,000 leagues - lengthwise, while we happen to be underwater.

Mr. Land: So you're saying we're 20,000 leagues underwater, under the sea?

First Mate: 20,000 leaguessss! That's pretty deep, Captain!

Captain Nemo: Oh, let's start over. Could you hand me that globe over there, please? [ globe is handed to him ] A league is just about.. three nautical miles, you see. So, 20,000 leagues would be, say, three times around the circumference of the Earth - or, 16,000 miles! so you couldn't go 20,000 leagues under the sea, or you'd come right out the other end, and that's impossible!

Professor: Ah, yes! So we are going to the center of the Earth!

Mr. Land: 20,000 leagues under the sea to the center of the Earth!

Perhaps not worthy, but could conceivably become a "surprise" adversary.

The point here is that NorK behaves irrationally. China tolerates it because they have to.

Since NK elected Butthead Johnny Un as the new ruler, there is no expectation that they will suddenly become a rational, global player anytime soon.

NK has a history of pulling some real stupid **** when the going gets tough. In the past, we have rewarded those outbursts with food, I believe. This time they popped off a firecracker, and the US pulled it's food aid.

What ever will Johnny Un do next?

(I'm sure Kim Jong-un has no real power)

North Korea has plenty of natural uranium reserves, with estimates of up to 300,000 metric tons.
