“We’ve been working really hard to make this car a secret,” said Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of the Chrysler’s SRT brand. “This vehicle was designed in Auburn Hills by Americans and it will be built in Detroit. However, we did consult with our friends at Ferrari and Maserati.”

Gilles said engineers in Italy, who work for Chrysler parent Fiat, are experts in small volume production of high-performance cars.

The 2013 Viper retains the basic shape of the old Dodge Viper; said to be designed after a beautiful woman lying on the beach. It has the Viper’s signature long hood, with stance and small interior cockpit.

Even after looking at some European platforms, Chrysler’s engineers stuck with a traditional shape that is 44% carbon fiber. That makes it the lightest Viper ever at 3,297 pounds.

Dodge and SRT Motorsports is getting into rally car racing with its new Dodge Dart and a one of the sport’s biggest stars: Travis Pastrana.

The 2013 Dodge Dart will participate in the 2012 Global RallyCross Championship Series with Pastrana — a four-time Rally America Champion and 17-time X Games Gold Medalist — behind the wheel.

The new Dodge Dart Rally Car will make its official public debut at the New York International Auto Show next month.

The car will be powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 16-valve turbo-charged engine with 600-plus horsepower engine with 550 pound feet of torque.

EDIT: I admit I was highly skeptical of the Chrysler-Fiat alliance when the news first broke, thinking they would last all of a few years before selling off the name plate and closing. Marchionne has them on the right track and with the best buzz coming from Motown since Iacocca was in charge.

But its been what, 20 years at least since the pentastar owned Lambo?

I just hope they got Ferrari and Maserati to work on the suspension and setup for the Viper. I think it would go a long way if the Viper could pull off a sub 1:20 on the Top Gear test track....

I would hope they'd get Ferrari and Maserati to help them develop something besides a 90deg truck engine for it.
