View Full Version : What a Disaster!

Just going through bins in the basement and I came accross my old bin of F1 tapes from 1988 onward. Popped in the 1994 Imola and holy **** - I frankly do not know of many race weekends that were really that bad.

Barichello's accident was crazy-nuts (nearly died), Ratzenberger dies on Friday then Lamy nearly slices himself in 2 when he slams into the back of JJ Lehto's Benetton - splitting his car in two. One tire flies onto the roof of the grand stands while the other tumbles into the actual grandstands.

Then of course Senna dies...

I know there have been more people (spectators for example) who have died during race weekends but at least for my time as a fan - nothing in any sport has come close to such a disaster that this weekend was.

I guess I never realized just how bad it was until I looked back.

'55?

Nope, Brown, Green, and Mackey. Not a dirt guy but I've heard of Black Sunday.

Has to be '55 with the Mercedes 300 SLR going into the crowd at Le Mans. It just about ended racing.

Yup, that's the one I meant. Vukey bought it a few weeks earlier, too.:(

Senna's manager almost talked him into walking out on the race weekend there, as Ayrton was already concerned about his safety there.

Race stewards were not happy that he made such a fuss about the safety issues, basically telling him to shut up and race.
