Detroit Auto Show opens today for press. Looks like the press embargo for the new Ford Fusion lifted at Midnight.

Looks nice. 1.6 Ecoboost w/170HP, 2.0 Ecoboost w/237HP, but the 6 speed stick is only available in the former. <sigh>

Of course we did have a Ford with a 170HP turbo engine once upon a time and that seemed peppy enough, but then it wasn't hauling around modern era safety gear. Just checked, the curb weight on the current Fusion is 360 pounds more than our '87 Merkur (Sierra to you Brits).

nrc,

How does it compare sizewise?

Good looking car.
Now we need an SHO version, maybe a wagon. Sign me up for that ride.

nrc,

How does it compare sizewise?

From someone onsite (http://hooniverse.com/2012/01/09/naias-morning-photo-dump/):

The new Ford Fusion is pretty. It also seems big, as in why-would-anyone-buy-a-Taurus big. Looks like Ford will have the same dilemma as Nissan does with the Maxima and Altima.

Automobile says that it's 1.1 inches longer and .5 inches wider than the current Fusion but it looks larger because the wheelbase has been stretched five inches with shorter overhangs.

Automotive engineers in the recent past seem to have become very good at squeezing extra space out of cars.

That is a good looking car.

Super nice. When does Aston Martin sue for completely stealing the nose from a DBS?

Acura NSX is back. . . (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/09/rebirth-of-the-acura-nsx/?hpw)

. . . and it is to be built in Ohio. (http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/honda_to_build_another_auto_plant_in_ohio.html)

Is anyone here going to the show and does anyone know off the top of their head how long it runs? I really want to go some year.

I think DM has been known to attend the show. This week is press, I think next week is public.

Nice gallery of photos and coverage here:

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/10/we-obsessively-covered-the-2012-detroit-auto-show/

Concepts that look pretty close to production of the Accord Coupe (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/10/2013-honda-accord-coupe-concept-detroit-2012/) and Lincoln MKZ (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/lincoln-mkz-concept-detroit-2012-photos/#photo-4735292/). Mixed feelings on both of those. At least Lincoln is trying to do something dynamic to stand out a bit more, but the C pillar looks pretty awkward from the three quarter angles.

I usually go every couple years. My experiences were that displays and cars were too similar every year.

I went last year, with a thread here about it. Won't be going this year simply because I am no longer living in Windsor at the moment.

nrc has it right. This week is press only, starting over the weekend and ending next weekend is for the public. Tix are about 15-18 bucks per person, a couple bucks for coat check (always recommended) and some bucks for snacks and meals and such. Its mostly an all day thing.

Since Cobo is next to the home of the Red Wings, its relatively easy to find lot parking around there for 10-15 bucks. There are many shuttles from local bars and or specialty lots(like the GM RenCen).

Always recommend going to anyone who wants to. Realize that weekends will be a mosh pit in the aisles. Weekdays are great if you can book it, plenty of room to walk around, hop in vehicles, talk to reps. And if last year was any indication, they will allow you to sit in almost anything. Years ago you were lucky to find any car over 40 grand that was unlocked. Last year it was noticeable to me that I could hop into any vehicle that was for sale.

Mazda's Takeri concept is supposed hint at the upcoming Mazda 6 overhaul. If it's anywhere close there will be a couple of hot mid-sized sedans to choose from.

Hit the Columbus Auto show last night. The new Fusion looks every bit as good as in photos. The new Boss Mustang with proper hockey stick stripes has me lusting over a School Bus yellow Boss even though it's too expensive, not my kind of car, and impractical. Hopefully I'll get over it.

The Ohio Cobra Club was there with a bunch of Cobra replicas. Still the ne plus ultra of automotive lust. I bought a raffle ticket for a yellow 289 replica. Maybe we'll go see more at their show in June.

The Mazda CX5 gives me hope that Mazda can recover from one of the most bizarre styling turns ever. Very nice inside and out. The Miata still feels like home. The current Mazda 3s were there, grinning like fools as usual.

Missy loved the Lancer Evolution's Recaro seat but wasn't thrilled about the basket handle on the deck lid. Is there a "ricer look delete" option?

The Subaru BRZ looked pretty nice. I have mixed feelings about the styling. The overall shape is very nice, but some of the Asian makes seem to be taking the crappy tack-on bits that the ricers are so fond of to heart. If they can make parts of the body flap in the wind the effect will be complete.

I liked the MINI roadster better than I expected. It will probably fall out of contention as my next car because it's not a proper RWD roadster, but its potential as a four season car is worth consideration. Also, our MINI dealer is light years beyond the local Mazda dealers in every department except price cutting.

The BMW/MINI area looked kind of absurd with 10 cars jammed into a tiny space with barely room for traffic among them. Maybe the intent was to make the expansive Cadillac display next door look mostly empty. If so, it worked.

Then there's Lincoln. How can Ford be doing so much right and still have such relentlessly boring cars in their luxary brand? If Lincoln wants to lower the age of their demographic to somewhere south of dead they could start by not making their interiors look like an old man's white loafers.

Grrl and I made a trip out to the London Cobra show yesterday. They'll have to hose down the streets to clean up all the drool with so many gorgeous cars around. Also great to see so many Cobras out on the roads. Almost all replicas, of course. There was one real '65 289 there but it was cordoned off with tape and cones making a good photo impossible.

We failed to win the car raffle so, alas, our dreams of Cobra ownership are dashed for another year.

The London Strawberry Festival runs concurrent with the Cobra show (or vice-versa) and as we wandered through the booths back to the car we came across one where Pete Johnson and Ickey Woods were raising money for their respective charities. It was very cool to chat with these guys and Ickey had some choice words about running a prevent defense in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXIII. Grrl picked up an autographed Johnson #46 throwback jersey to replace her deteriorating Krumrie #69 and I got a mini helmet replica with Wood #30.

Beautiful day, beautiful cars.

A few of my photos from the Simeone Auto Museum in Philly. Saturday was a demo day - running their "Ferrari Beaters" and, by special request, running the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe.

The museum has their photos up here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25974539@N02/with/7665516670/#photo_7665516670).

Most of the cars in the collection and NOT fully restored, but they can run nearly all of them. From what some volunteers have said, he made a decision to keep them "as is" if possible - with the exception of fixes needed to keep them running.

As a matter of fact, on Saturday he was complaining that the 917 had an external battery and needed more service than most cars in his collection.

Site still says "Fall". The worst thing about Fords these days is that you still have to buy them from Ford dealers.

I'm not usually a fan of black cars but that looks like Darth Vadar's executive transport just pulled up.

'13 Fusions are showing in Inventory search as on order from dealers. So far manuals are non-existent.

The news from planet Zoom Zoom is no better. The new 6 is officially unveiled and word so far is that the top engine, a 190hp 4 banger, will not be offered with a stick. While I admire Mazda's thinking with the whole "SkyActiv" thing, how can they make such a gorgeous car such a wheezer?
