Sadly one competitor has died of a heart attack:

Argentinean rider Jorge Boero was the victim of a fall

Today at 11:19 am, Argentinean rider Jorge Boero (motorcycle no. 175) was the victim of a fall at km 55 of the special of the first stage between Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa. The rider suffered a cardiac arrest following his fall and was attended five minutes after the accident by the medical staff, who reached the place of the incident by helicopter. Despite their best efforts, the doctors were unable to resuscitate the pilot, who died while he was being taken to hospital.
38-year-old Jorge Boero was taking part in his second Dakar. In 2011, he withdrew from the rally during the sixth stage.

The organisers of the rally offer their heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Sadly one competitor has died of a heart attack:

:( He was young, I wonder if it was the old handle bar in the sternum?

nope, he would have won stage one if not for towing nasser back in.

Nasser makes up by winning stage 2 and robby 3rd for the stage. results not final at the moment with cars still yet to complete the stage. if correct this will put Robby 2nd overall 2:28 out of the lead. nasser's stellar stage 2 run brings him 36th to 6th overall 8:47 back.

Been putting it on my DVR and watching it when I get the chance.

Did anyone see the American dude wipe out on his bike on Stage 3(?)? Hurt his shoulder/broke collarbone or something and had a black eye one normally gets in a really bad bar fight.

The bike got wrecked and the guy is lucky to be alive.

This racing on pavement is for sissies. You've got to have some serious attachments to run this race and do well.

yeah that is Jonah Street, he sure rung his bell good. this is jonah's 6th and final Dakar, just announced retirement from rally racing (being broke all year).

looking forward to tonights recap, looks like nasser broke down and robby left him. robby finished 2nd on the stage and nasser came in 11th 23 minutes back.

overall the top three spots are held by the mini's with robby in 4th 13:35 back. nasser now 8th overall 51:14 behind.

It wasn’t Jonas Street who had the bad crash—it was Quinn Cody, who won the 2011 Baja 1000:

Between Jon Beekhuis’ excellent commentary and the breath-taking HD video, I’m thoroughly enjoying this year's race coverage.

What a bunch of sissies and wimps. They canceled today's(?) stage where they were supposed to go over the Andes from Argentina into Chile through a mountain pass at 15,000-feet in a raging blizzard. First time a Dakar stage has been called due to snow.

If they had real Legends of the Brickyard in that race, they wouldn't let a little bit of snow slow them down. :gomer: :tony: Just a bunch of foreign ride buyin' Nancy boyzz.
