Hurts more than I would have thought. :(

Fifteen years, time for her relief. Her body was broken, her spirit - never. Probably why we waited too long to take her in. She was too happy for her own good.

So sorry to hear that. It's been over a year since our lab/hound left us and it still stings.

I have a feeling you gave her a good life.

Mom lost both of her Jack Russel's, Scooter we had to put down in december of 2009 of cancer (I was in for initial shot before euthenasia, but could not watch) , and then we lost Daisy to congestive heart failure december last year (died in peace in my moms arms at home, I only got to see her afterwards when we took her to vet later to be cremated.

Am still not over Daisy, had such a connection to that dog, and it still hurts today.

Its going to be a rough couple of weeks, but hang in there, and make sure to not feel any guilt. Guilt is an ugly beast that you must fight off with all your might.

Just remember, your pet is now running free and happy, and in a much better place.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Oh, I'm so sorry to read this. Have another friend struggling with the same situation. It hurts but that moment comes when you know it's the right thing to do. Ups to you for putting her well being above your own. Clearly you loved her as much as she loved you. :(

Sincere condolences, G. The toughest thing about our four legged friends is having the courage and kindness to let them go when it's the right thing for them. Take comfort in knowing that you did the right thing for your friend.

I miss all of my dogs that we've lost but they make me appreciate my current two dogs ever more. My Ridgeback is curled up under my desk right at my feet right now, in fact. She hates when the cold air moves in.

Sorry to hear of your loss, G. :(

All good doggies go to heaven. Sirius, also known as the dog star, is the brightest star in the night sky. You can find it by lining up the three stars in Orion's belt.

My condolences on the loss of your beloved dog; I know how much it hurts to lose a furry family member. I'll bet that was one well-loved and cared-for dog to have been so happy.

Can never read that Rainbow Bridge thing without crying...think I'll go hug my Beaudog now.

G. - so sorry to hear about the loss....
Still to this day, the toughest thing I have ever done is hold my best friend, my beagle, named Mikey, in my arms as the vet pushed in the drugs that put him at peace. He had cancer in the throat, had one surgery, but another wasnt worth the pain he was in.
The memories you have of the great times with you pet will last forever.
That is a guarantee, but it doesnt take the sting out of the loss, but as you can see alot of us have already been there... keep the good memories fresh!

I know what it's like. Just a couple of weeks ago our Dachshund Casey left us forever after a long battle against a bunch of problems. I still keep looking at where her blanket used to be and hoping she'd still be there. :(

My sympathies too.

I've quoted this many times since you first posted it, WB, and I'm sorry that it's time to say it again.

My condolences on the loss of your beautiful little pet, Andrew and Trevor. If it helps at all, do tell us how she got such an unusual name.

Sorry man - I've put a few down myself and it's rough. Go rescue a new one ASPA - you'll feel better!Knowing Helinda wasn't going to be with us forever, my daughter rescued "Oliver" last spring from NC.

He's a complete idiot and we love him to heck.http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/247664_1542604945352_1841834324_936226_1883395_n.j pg

We've known Helinda since she was a pup, bred and training to be service dog for Canine Companions. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/180193_10150104024853058_691383057_6049534_3830704 _n.jpgShe was the first of eight pups my folks raised for them, but a few traits prompted a "career change". Those same traits made her almost the perfect family dog for us when she "adopted" us. She was older than my youngest, and the others don't remember a time before her.

She took care of us all.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If it helps at all, do tell us how she got such an unusual name. She was given that by Canine Companions. http://www.cci.org/site/c.cdKGIRNqEmG/b.3978475/k.3F1C/Canine_Companions_for_Independence.htm They breed their own dogs -- a mix of golden labs and golden retrievers bred for their temperament and inclination to serve.

Pups in each litter start with the same letter -- in her case an H. That helps them keep track of which dog came from which litter, so in her case all her brothers and sisters' name started with an H. I guess there are only so many female names starting with H.

Much as I hate to agree, your lovely Oliver does look like a doofus in fur. But very huggy. I had another friend who raised dogs for Canine Companions. Wonderful dogs. And wonderful people who do that.

I'm sorry about the loss of your lovely Helinda; my condolences to the Longman family. :(

Your new dog Oliver reminds me of my Beau (a beagle/Boston terrier mix, whose name was also Oliver before I adopted him). That photo cracks me up!
