I'm thinking of moving from my corded phone to a cordless model, like this one (http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/panasonic-panasonic-2-handset-dect-6-0-cordless-phone-with-answering-machine-kxtg4032b-kxtg4032b/10143813.aspx?path=2606e244a30717f3e5fedad629b042d ben02). It has voicemail which I want.

On these models, can you typically check voicemail messages form an outside phone; e.g. check calls from work?

Thanks ..... Ted

Every answering machine... errr voice mail that we've ever had has had that feature. I would guess that it's just assumed since they don't list it in the feature highlights. If you want to check and make sure you can probably find the owner's manual online.

We've had very good luck with Uniden cordless phones. Check this model, for example.

We've had a set of Panasonic 5.8 GHz cordless for a while and they have been good. They are about six years old and I've had to replace all the batteries for the first time in the last year.

Not sure what the new DECT technology brings to the table but they all seem to have it now.

Just keep the corded phone around should you ever wish to make a phone call during a black out.

Agree with that, I've got a couple stashed for emergencies.

yes, but using the term "voicemail" is misleading.

Voice mail is provided by your phone company, for a fee.
The Panny phones can use voice mail (provided by your phone company, for a fee) or it has a built-in answering machine that you can call from a remote location, with a PIN.

As someone who has bought too many cordless phones I'd suggest the DECT 6.0 phones from the standpoint of interference. They operate outside of WiFi/Microwave frequencies. (They operate at 1.9 GHz.) Also, from personal experience, I really like the Panasonic one I have because it uses AAA batteries. When they go bad, they are much easier (and cheaper) to replace (plus you get a better replacement).

i have a couple older 5.8 panisonics which work great, bought my girlfriend the 6.0 vtech and is just as good, maybe better. buy a package of 4 so even if you don't need them all the spare handsets and batteries are worth the investment. phones listed below all have built in answering machines that allow you to retrieve messages from an outside phone using a code.

I agree on extra handsets. I use my phone a lot for work. I use 2 handsets with 1 base. 1 dies, I just swap them. With them separated, I seem to have them both dead simultaneously more often than I'd like.

Remember, those sets are modular. You can buy one with one or two handsets, and go back to buy additional handsets as you go along. Not necessarily the most economical way to do it, but it does give you the chance to spread the $$ over more than just a one-time purchase.

Unfortunately, like you said, they aren't the cheapest to add later. Can almost buy a new 2-handset system for the cost of the add-on. Only downfall being you can't share the phone book between the sets.

Thanks for the thread. I used VTech for years but got a Uniden last time for some feature or another that I don't think I ever used. Can't wait to get back to the VTech. Maybe Santa......

Can't share the phone book between the handsets? I have a DHEC, and it shares everything from the base. Phone book, caller id, redial list...

If you mean you can't share the phonebook between to separate box systems, I bet you could reprogram the handsets to all be on the same base, as long as they are the same model.

Yeah, I mean the latter. I have seen some ability across models, but I wouldn't count on it. I assumed it'd be some time out where they'd stop selling the model.
