People felt it up here as well. Initial reports were that Terry Pegula's wallet had just fallen out of his pocket, but those were soon proven false. :)

I guess there was an earthquake in Denver this morning, too!

In the thriving metropolis of Mineral, VA- 40 miles west of my office. Local media seems almost let down that it was neither a terrorist act nor has it resulted in North Anna nuke crapping itself a la Japan.

I signed up for hurricanes and oppressive humidity; earthquakes weren't supposed to be part of the deal. And we might get a two-fer with Irene headed our way as well. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. :irked:

My sister told me that they felt it pretty good in southern New Jersey:

I replied that it was good practice for living in California (where she hopes to relocate in a couple years.)

Felt like someone heavy was walking around the room. Except no one was. I thought maybe I was just having palpitations. I was watching the news waiting for an update on Lybia and they were interviewing a Senator from the Capital building. Didn't think anything of it until the Senator on TV was talking about the building shaking.

Trevor and Nick were both playing (different) on line games and didn't realize what was happening until the people they were playing with mentioned something. Trevor just thought the dog's wagging tail was hitting his chair, not knowing the dog wasn't in the room (he can be like that )

Much ado about little. Cable news response over the top as usual. August is a slow news month.

We had an earthquake centered about three miles north of us a few years back. Everyone, including the cops thought it was an explosion and ran all over the county looking for something that had blown up.

That was cool.

Is Travel Gal laughing at people freaking out over a 5.8? :)

A couple co-workers IM'd me when they felt it and we were trying to locate it and were shocked at how far away it was. 200 and 400 miles away. Seemed like a long way to go. I also thought a <6.0 is going to be a major problem. But given all the evacuations and stuff, I don't know where I got that idea.

We had a 5+ several years ago here in Gomerville (actually centered in Evansville IN). I was on the 5th floor at work and thought I was getting dizzy or maybe lightheaded, until someone else said "do you feel that?"

I blame the amount of coverage on ESPN's east coast bias.

Wait...

Well, actually, yes. Wimps! All wimps!

My fave email exchange was one friend (from Oregon) telling another (from Virginia) she should get her preparedness kit ready because there would be aftershocks and friend #2 asked what that was.

Some good stuff geologically speaking though. Since 1900, the East Coast has had an earthquake of this magnitude (counting yesterday), exactly two times. The West coast has had just over 100. That is apparently because we're at the lunatic fringe, I mean, we're at the edge of the North American/Pacific plate boundary so everything's shakin' but the East Coast is hundreds to thousands of miles into the center of the North American plate so things tend to build up over time.

The quake travels further throughout the East because the rocks there are older, harder, even brittle and because there are no fault lines to stop the shock waves. Here in the West, the earth is newer and broken in many places by fault lines that create boundaries. Think of a bell that is in one piece or cracked. Dr. Lucy from CalTech said that so it has to be true. :D

I think of him so often. A question will pop into my head and I'll think, "OC would have an answer for that," or when reading a thread, I think, "OC would make some really good/funny/germane comment right about now." Just the other day, I was wondering if his family in RL knows how much those of us here on the other OC still miss him.

Gal, you know I'd give you a bell if I was in the country. You're nice. :o :o

Back to the earthquakes, seems like we are getting closer to Australia with all this plate movement so it won't be long before we are sharing a BBQ, eh Aussies? He he he.

WTF does an earthquake have to do with weather and why does the weather channel feel it needs 2 b EQ central whenever there is one? And on another note, a tsunami is not weather, sorry. Maybe they should call it the natural disaster channel
