I was in the basement in the finished area for us kids listening to the radio when they announced this. Ran up stairs to tell Mom and Dad just in time to hear Howard Cosell announce it on Monday Night Football.

My brother, who idolized Lennon, was asleep and it fell to me to tell him while he ate breakfast the next morning.

Hard to believe it has been 30 years.

If you want to watch something really special-

this a 2 hour documentary that was on PBS' American Masters

"LENNONYC"

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/lennonyc/watch-the-full-film/1722/

filled with people that knew him best and music.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

So sad that he's gone.

I learned of this on NPRs Morning Edition waking up at my girlfriend's place the following morning. A Tuesday, four days before graduation from college with no real plans except to work real hard to stay cool. It was really friggin cold and there was ice on the windows.

It seemed surreal. He just came out with an album, after years of being out of the limelight, so I/people were thinking about him again. He wasn't a politician so it just seemed weird that someone would want to assassinate him. I was never a huge fan, but really. And personally a big chapter in my life was about to change. Like I said, surreal.

Then in March Reagan was shot and in May the Pope was shot. The world was getting a little crazy. Who wants to shoot John Lennon? Who want so shoot a Pope? This was before Seles was stabbed and rap stars starting shooting each other. The hostages were still in Tehran and Reagan had just won. We're used to crazy now.

I'm a cynical old guy now who sees him warts and all, but it would be impossible to exaggerate the influence he had on me as an idealistic 16 year old in 1980.
