Airlines and cruise lines have said this for a year. Too bad they didn't mention that. It's the reason airlines tout the quick exchange of air and cruise ships have modified circulation, when possible, to individual cabins to the outside air, not recirculated throughout.

Apparently this started in 2017 but I just heard about it. I wonder if it also smooths the ride at all.

Seatrade reports Silverstream Technologies won an order from Meyer Werft to install its air lubrication technology on Carnival Cruise Line's 2023 Excel-class ship. The Silverstream System uses a series of air release units in the flat bottom of a vessel to generate a rigid carpet of microbubbles that travel the full length of the hull. The 344-meter Carnival ship, like other vessels in the Excel class, will be powered by LNG. This news follows the order and ongoing installation of the Silverstream System on P&O Cruises’ vessel Arvia, also an Excel-class vessel, currently under construction at Meyer Werft. Silverstream’s relationship with Carnival Corp. & plc began in 2017 with the installation of its technology in Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess. The performance of the Silverstream System on this vessel, verified at more than 5% net fuel and emissions savings by classification society Lloyd’s Register, laid the groundwork for more installations.

Legoland California To Debut Ferrari ‘Build And Race’ Interactive Attraction
Travelmole reports the world’s first LEGO Ferrari ‘Build and Race’ interactive attraction is coming to LEGOLAND California Resort in spring of 2022. Featuring a life-size Ferrari F40 model developed by the LEGO Group, Build and Race puts guests in the driver’s seat as they make their way through the ‘garage’ to the ‘racetrack’ using their imagination to build, test and race their own LEGO Ferrari. "Ferrari is renowned for manufacturing cars unique in terms of performance, innovation and design. We have millions of young guests who can be inspired from this to create their own unique cars in this one-of-a-kind testing and racing facility," said LEGOLAND California Resort President Kurt Stocks. "We are excited to build upon our existing relationship with the LEGO Group by combining our leading brands within this transformative entertainment attraction. The Build and Race experience has been designed to engage with both Ferrari and LEGO lovers of all ages, aligning with Ferrari’s strategy to reach out to its younger fans," said Director of Location Based Entertainment & Esports for Ferrari Annabel Rochfort. Build and Race features three zones designed to be interactive. A LEGO pit crew member will greet guests as they enter the attraction, sharing Ferrari fun facts, race history, and showcasing themed LEGO race gear and awards. Once inside the garage, guests have the opportunity [i.e., spend more $$] to sit in a life-size Ferrari F40 model developed by the LEGO Group and have their photo taken. The journey continues as guests get to use their creativity and build their own LEGO Ferrari car to race at one of three racetracks which include the test zone, steering test track and speed test track. Each track offers guests different obstacles, challenges and a chance to clock in the fastest time. A DUPLO build zone offers younger guests the chance to design their own creation out of bigger bricks. Finally, once guests have customised their vehicles and raced them through the obstacles, they will be able to create a custom digital Ferrari race car. Guests can digitally scan their vehicle and further customize their Ferrari along with their minifigure racing driver. Once complete, the cars are digitally projected on a LEGO racetrack. Build and Race will be included in the price of admission to LEGOLAND California Resort.

Meanwhile, RIP FCA, long live Stellantis? Sounds like one of those late night drug ads.

Looks pretty grim from the Chrysler brand. I think they should just cut bait on Fiat. Could they badge engineer the CUVs from Peugeot line and create something palatable for Merkins? The 508 could make a good looking 300 with a little grill work and a CUV is a CUV. But what about the Charger and Challenger? How long can they keep freshening up the same old panzers?

https://www.motortrend.com/news/stellantis-fca-peugeot-merger-chrysler-dodge-fate/

We now have the answer. The current Charger/Challenger platform will be discontinued after the 2023. They'll try to pivot into performance electrics and hybrids but we'll see how that works out.

CBS news reports a ship carrying a load of coal when it sank in a storm in 1891 has been discovered in Lake Superior off Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Atlanta is well-preserved in the extremely cold lake, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society said Thursday. The shipwreck group posted photos and video with the name of the ship clearly visible at a depth of more than 600 feet, roughly 35 miles off Deer Park, Michigan. Video also clearly shows the ship's wheel, pump and broken-off mast. "It is rare that we find a shipwreck that so clearly announces what it is and the name-board of the Atlanta really stands out," said Bruce Lynn, executive director of the shipwreck society. "It is truly ornate and still beautiful after 130 years on the bottom of Lake Superior." .... survivors said all three masts broke off during the storm, and sonar video does indeed show all three masts broke off flush with the deck and are nowhere to be found.

Legoland California Launches Ferrari Build And Race Attraction

Travelmole reports LEGOLAND California Resort has debuted its newest attraction, LEGO Ferrari Build and Race. Capitalizing on the popularity of Formula 1 racing (with viewership up 56% compared to 2020), the new attraction puts visitors in the driver’s seat with cutting-edge digital technology. “On the heels of Miami’s Grand Prix, we know what a thrill the Formula 1 races can be, and we’re excited to give our guests a taste of that experience,” said President of LEGOLAND California Resort Kurt Stocks. The centerpiece of the opening was a life-size, bright red Ferrari F40 model developed by the LEGO Group, the only model of its kind in the world. The LEGO model took a team of master model builders more than 3,800 hours and more than 350,000 LEGO elements to create. It stands at 14 feet long, 4 feet tall, and weighs more than 3,000 lbs. Guests can sit in the full-scale Ferrari F40 model and have their photos taken. LEGO Ferrari Build and Race lets guests build, test, and race their very own LEGO Ferrari. A fully customizable experience, guests can digitally modify their LEGO car down to its engine size, tire specs, power, and aerodynamics, plus personalize the license plate.

World's Fastest Electric Flying'Ferry To Make Commuting In Stockholm Faster Than Cars And Metros

euronews.com reports the world’s fastest electric ship will soon navigate the archipelago around Stockholm in a bid to make public transport by water more attractive. The Candela P-12 Shuttle will begin operating in Sweden’s capital next year with its makers claiming the vessel to be not only the fastest of its kind with a speed of 30 knots, but also the most energy-efficient electric ship ever. The water-borne shuttle has three carbon-fibre wings that extend from under the hull, allowing the ship to lift itself above the water, thus decreasing drag and increasing speed and stability. "Flying" across the water, the shuttle will transport commuters between Ekerö, a rapidly-expanding neighborhood in Stockholm's suburbs, and the city center “faster than the subway and bus lines it competes with, as well as to car-travel during rush hour,” said the company in a statement. The Candela P-12 Shuttle covers the 15 km route in only 25 minutes, saving travellers about 50 minutes every day. Because of its innovative design, the boat creates a “near-zero wake” and it has been granted an exemption from the 12-knot speed limit in the Region of Stockholm.

Every morning, you are gently awakened by the Amazon Halo Rise. From its perch on your nightstand, the round device has spent the night monitoring the movements of your body, the light in your room, and the space’s temperature and humidity. At the optimal moment in your sleep cycle, as calculated by a proprietary algorithm, the device’s light gradually brightens to mimic the natural warm hue of sunrise. Your Amazon Echo, plugged in somewhere nearby, automatically starts playing your favorite music as part of your wake-up routine. You ask the device about the day’s weather; it tells you to expect rain. Then it informs you that your next “Subscribe & Save” shipment of Amazon Elements Super Omega-3 softgels is out for delivery. On your way to the bathroom, a notification bubbles up on your phone from Amazon’s Neighbors app, which is populated with video footage from the area’s Amazon Ring cameras: Someone has been overturning garbage cans, leaving the community’s yards a total wreck. Been following the Jay Leno story. Grossman Burn Center is nationally known. It's the best you can get. So far, one surgery to remove necrotized tissue and replace with a type of synthetic skin to promote healing on the side of his face. Another surgery scheduled. He's up, walking around, and giving cookies to the children undergoing treatment there. His doctors said twice in the interview that he's very compliant. This is very important. Especially because he thought he'd be out of there more quickly than he will. I suppose they thought he'd try to "pull rank" but he doesn't. Edit: The docs also say they don't know yet whether there will be any visual remains of the incident. This is huge because it means there is the possibility that he can heal so well you will not not know he was burned.

I got to fly on one just once. I made a point to book a flight from Chicago to Denver on a 747 when we went out for the Denver race. It was amazing. We were put in holding pattern outside Denver because the airport was closed with tornadoes in the area. We were held so long that they had to divert to Salt Lake City to refuel. A book I have bought and is still on the shelf to read, but i have gotten the gist of it.

https://www.amazon.ca/Empty-Planet-Global-Population-Decline/dp/1984823213

Most United Nations forecasts say that the world population would plateau around 11 bill or even as high as 17 billion.

The writers have a dimmer view, saying 9 billion and change is humanity's high water mark and then its down we go.

Urbanization, education of women, less religion, and honestly the pressure of baby boomers and their financial demands have pushed younger couples into worrying about financial survival before bringing kids into the equation. Even in your CNN article it says China  had a population decline recently. That hardcore government intervention on family births may come back to bite them hard in 20-30 years.

All 1st world countries will experience population decline, the only ones that will weather the storm best are those who will embrace immigration, to keep the working class paying taxes to offset high pension and healthcare costs.

It'll be an interesting thing to see, except most of us won't be here to see it. :irked:

Exactly. The real crisis is population implosion. Population growth starts to fall in almost every case as countries lift themselves out of poverty.

I heard (dunno if true) that Hungary is now discounting federal income taxes for women by 25% for each child they have. Four kids, no taxes for life (for her). Wouldn't surprise me to see something similar happen in a LOT of places...

If you want to spend 15 hours lying perfectly still inside an MRI machine, you can start to train this non-invasive brain activity monitor to read your thoughts.

Pretty amazing and potentially a good thing as long as you hold the key by needing to train it. But how long until they get enough samples to start figuring it out for themselves?

Columbus Air Show today. We had show center seats for the Blue Angels. Amazing as always.

I really enjoyed the video in this local article by a local reporter taken for a demonstration ride. He passes out three times but manages not to lose his lunch.

https://www.dispatch.com/story/opinion/columns/2023/06/16/when-is-columbus-air-show-2023-blue-angels-preformance-ohio-doral-chenoweth-flies-passes-out-ohio/70325037007/

I enjoyed the video because the area where the bulk of the flight is performed south of Columbus along the route to our home town an hour away. Back when we were kids that rural area of southern Ohio south east of Wright Pat in Dayton and south of Rickenbacher in Columbus was a frequent playground for military planes. Sonic booms were common.

We used to hear sonic booms in north suburban Chicago during the Viet Nam years. Navy jets would wind it up out over Lake Michigan.

I grew up 20-25 miles nw of Bunker Hill AFB, later renamed Grissom AFB. The B 58s were based there in the 60s. Since it was designed to deliver nuclear payloads everyone knew the base had nukes stored in quite visible underground bunkers. We also knew the base would be at the top of Russia’s list of targets. Every summer we’d be treated to sonic booms. Sometime they were a low level. I can recall a pair flying very low over our farm. It was awe inspiring. Fun times for a kid not totally realizing the gravity of the situation.

Things are getting pretty wacky in Russia right now.

Lots of finger pointing over attacks between Russian regular forces and Wagner mercenaries. There are reports of Russian MOD troops raiding Wagner HQ and Wagner troops raiding an MOD office.

Root cause may be that they are fighting over rapidly dwindling supplies and nobody wants to be the one stuck with the blame for stealing most of them. Lots of people are going up against the wall before this is over.

Did Prigozhin Just Get Disappeared by Duplicitous Putin? (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/did-prigozhin-just-get-disappeared-by-duplicitous-putin/ar-AA1d2xgE)

On Saturday night, with his heavily armed mercenaries closing in on Moscow, Yevgeny Prigozhin abruptly announced that he was shutting down his insurrection after a negotiated settlement that would allow him to walk away peacefully.

He hasn’t been heard from since.

The endless chatter of his press service’s Telegram channel has fallen silent, and there’s no sign of the Wagner boss anywhere.

Wall Street Journal: Wagner boss planned to capture top Russian defense chiefs
https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/28/europe/wagner-prigozhin-rebellion-capture-attempt-intl/index.html

Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin planned to seize two of Russia top military officials when he launched a short-lived mutiny on Saturday, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing Western officials.

Prigozhin’s plot involved the capture of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and top army general Valery Gerasimov when the pair visited a region along the border of Ukraine, the WSJ wrote.

Better hope they don’t hold a grudge

Scientists say they’ve found a site that marks a new chapter in Earth’s history (https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/11/world/anthropocene-epoch-geological-time-unit-scn/index.html)

The AWG, a group currently comprised of 35 geologists, has been working since 2009 to make the Anthropocene part of Earth’s official timeline. The group determined in 2016 that the Anthropocene epoch began around 1950 — the start of the era of nuclear weapons tests, the geochemical traces of which can be found around the world. Since then, the researchers have considered 12 sites that could provide the key piece of evidence needed to support their proposal, nine of which were put to a vote.

On Tuesday, the scientists announced the geological site — Crawford Lake in Ontario, Canada — that best captures the geological impact of the Anthropocene, according to their research.

For the Anthropocene, the proposed golden spike location is sediment cored from the bed of Crawford Lake that reveals the geochemical traces of nuclear bomb tests, specifically plutonium — a radioactive element widely detected across the world in coral reefs, ice cores and peat bogs.

this inspires some deep thoughts

A U.S. soldier crossed into North Korea "willfully and without authorization" and was believed to be in the custody of the country's forces, U.S. and international officials said Tuesday. The United Nations Command, which operates the Joint Security Area within the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, first confirmed that an unidentified U.S. national had crossed the border.
