Goodbye F ducts, hello rear wing flaps.

Adjustable wing to aid passing in 2011 (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84682)

Here is the part I like :saywhat: :

"In the race, you can't use it for the first two laps at all, but after that if you're within a second of the car in front then you will be able to deploy it.

Really? Only then? And how do we police this? :shakehead

You'll just have to remember that an Italian second is three times longer than a Woking second, and that all Ferraris start races on the third lap.

The hits just keep on coming -
107 per cent rule returns for 2011 (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84690)

And it includes the Milka rule:

"Under exceptional circumstances, however, which may include setting a suitable laptime in a free practice session, the stewards may permit the car to start the race. Should there be more than one driver accepted in this manner, the grid order will be determined by the stewards."

F1 gets more idiotic... geez what a suprise.

I've got it..... If they only went back to front engined roadsters with no wings and got american dirt track drivers to take over all the drivers positions it would be so much improved... Oh, and change all the tracks to ovals.

I wonder who thought, more complex aero, that's what we need!

Mechanical grip should be the focus.

The device would increase the straightline speed of the car behind by approximately 15km/h to help overtaking, but could not be used on the opening laps of a race. The car in front would not be able to deploy the system in defence, but would be able to retaliate using the wing once it was following the rival car.

This is rubbish. Absolute rubbish.

Drivers unimpressed by rear wing plan (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84716)

Says Mark Weber:

"We need to get the balance right in having skillful races between each other, and not an IRL [IndyCar] race where you pass each other four times per lap and everyone gets bored of that."

Obviously, he just doesn't get it. :tony:;)

Same kinda thing happened back when the Romans f'ed up chariot racing. Once they allowed those razor hubs it was all downhill from there...

How long before all racing turns to virtual reality, where the cars can drive through one another without blocking or damage? :gamerkitty: :p

Another gem from Webber:

Australian Mark Webber, winner of two races with Red Bull this season, was also doubtful about the changes.

"It is good for the Playstation I think, but I don't know how well it is going to work in F1," he told reporters.

"Overtaking moves should be about pressurising, being skillful, and tactical. Yes we want to see more overtaking, of course we do, we know that, but we also need to keep the element of skill involved in overtaking and not just hitting buttons."

Tony's plan for the IRL to be bigger than F1 is obviously bearing fruit. One of the drivers has heard of it.

Webber is just worried his blocking skills aren't up to the challenge if the other car has a 15 kph advantage on the straight.

Other changes:

"From 2011, any driver whose best qualifying lap exceeds 107% of the fastest Q1 qualifying time will not be allowed to take part in the race. Under exceptional circumstances, however, which may include setting a suitable lap time in a free practice session, the stewards may permit the car to start the race. Should there be more than one driver accepted in this manner, the grid order will be determined by the stewards."

With Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) returning in 2011 the minimum weight of the car will be increased to 640kg to accommodate the extra bulk.

Coming in with immediate effect is a tightening up of the in-lap rules during qualifying, as a direct result of Lewis Hamilton stopping on track after taking pole in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. Drivers must now stay under a maximum time - decided before each race - on the way back to the pits, although the punishment has not been revealed.

There is no need for contrived nonsense like this. We just need common sense changes to the configuration of the cars. Repealing the 2009 rules would be a good start. The problem of having the front downforce disappear when following another car is not solved by making front-end grip more dependent on aero downforce.

I've got an idea - lets make crappy tires to make the racing better.

Ecclestone wants short-life tyres (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85099)

"This way we'd have more tyre changes at different times and there would be more confusion. The best races are the messy ones."

What if some tires are designed to explode? Maybe the occasional brake failure? :shakehead

EDIT - I should have added - those built-in track sprinklers seem more and more real each day!

Methanolandbrats

I think thinner brake disks would really spice up the show

Insomniac

I'm just wondering, but was there ever a time that OWR tires didn't put marbles all over the track? More marbles on the track won't help anything.

Simplify the aero (simple wings, ground effects generate most of the down force) and open up the mechanical.

Next Bernie will suggest having the KERS discharge into the drivers seat randomly...:\

When my dad worked in a hardware store after his stateside stint in Korea, he and the other wags used to fill out requisition sheets for items that didn't exist, i.e. left-handed metric wingnuts.

Sounds like F1 is on the verge of requiring everyone to use aluminum masonry nails. :shakehead:shakehead
