Where the industry started…
80s computer brands

Amazon is not in the subject line but I’m posting this here, just because.
Amazon just walked out on its self-checkout technology
https://www.engadget.com/amazon-just-walked-out-on-its-self-checkout-technology-191703603.html
The technology has been plagued by issues from the onset. Most notably, Just Walk Out merely presents the illusion of automation, with Amazon crowing about generative AI and the like. Here’s where the smoke and mirrors come in. While the stores have no actual cashiers, there are reportedly over 1,000 real people in India scanning the camera feeds to ensure accurate checkouts.

I was going to comment that iRobot was left out because I thought Amazon had acquired them. It turns out that fell through due to European anti-trust concerns.
I love our Roomba but had ruled out an upgrade because I don't want an Amazon spy roaming our house. Now that's on the table again, so I'm happy. But iRobot had their own privacy snafu.

Turns out that was from a development version of the robot, but it's an example of the risk.

AI-MING HIGHER New Google footage teases future of AI-generated movies with DeepMind tool that even creates soundtracks for videos (https://www.the-sun.com/tech/11677209/new-google-ai-generated-movies-deepmind/)
"Video generation models are advancing at an incredible pace, but many current systems can only generate silent output. One of the next major steps toward bringing generated movies to life is creating soundtracks for these silent videos," Google wrote.
OpenAI hits Google where it hurts with new SearchGPT prototype (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/07/openai-hits-google-where-it-hurts-with-new-searchgpt-prototype/)
how is this monetized?
You’ll be upgrading every year :p :D
Am I okay to upgrade now or should I wait until July to get a full six years out of my XS? :p
I was checking this thread to see when I got the XS so I'd know if I should feel guilty upgrading. :D
I want to try T-mobile on our rural property. T-mobile swears they have 5G Extended Range coverage down in our holler where Verizon has nuttin and AT&T has 4G that can barely manage 3G speeds on a hotspot with an antenna.
So figure I'll get an unlocked iPhone 16 and do a monthly prepaid T-mobile account to try it out. If it doesn't work out I can try other carriers until I find the best one and then port my number from Verizon.
My XS has held up well and is still getting updates. My only gripe about the XS has been that lightening cables have been much less reliable than any other USB standard. The connectors break constantly. Thank goodness for wireless charging and USB C on anything new.
