My take is that they plan to use it as a new social network platform. I'm on it, but just use it occasionally. $26.2B? Just nuts, IMHO.

LinkedIn robbed Microsoft. As a stockholder, I'm not happy. I know they have piles of cash, but it could've been better spent on R&D. LinkedIn is not worth more than $10B.

It would have been nice if they'd spent that $26B figuring out how to reliably bring modal dialog windows to the front.

A huge issue with LinkedIn is that it is slowly becoming too much like social media. Too many memes and other crap get posted.

I just don't know what changes. CEO now reports to Nardella. I hope he has a plan for it because they aren't making money on it right now. They certainly have a lot of members, but it's not entirely clear what the platform is going to really excel at. Social media dedicated to only professional activities? Finding jobs? Some networking? Groups? Remember they bought Yammer before for a mere $1.2B. They bought Skype for < $10B. Both of those are now part of Office 365, so I see the value. I guess time will tell, but this seems like a bad idea. Who else was thinking about paying that much for them?

Alright, since this type of analysis is my job, I've been reading and reading on this all morning. Apparently MS thinks they can help you get your job done, Clippy fashion, by reading what you're doing in Office and suggesting people from LinkedIn to help.

Quote:
"A digital assistant that’s predictive – Today Cortana knows about you, your organization and about the world. In the future, Cortana will also know your entire professional network to connect dots on your behalf so you stay one step ahead."

To which I immediately think:

The thing is, most of what I do in Office is on my work computer which likely won't be tied to my LinkedIn profile. If they are mining my person Office they will be sending me crafting related jobs because that's what my wife uses Office for. Again, this is a headscratcher to me, at least at the price.

There have been a lot of rumors over the past year or so about Apple secretly working on a car. While we don't have anything concrete to report on that front, we do know that some former Apple employees have left the mothership to work on car-related tech. Their company is called Pearl, and it just emerged from stealth mode with a rather cool wireless backup camera system, called RearVision.

I love the rearview camera on my car. Especially when parked between two large SUVs.

But this is kind of pricey.

No, not HD changeover, digital TV transition (I know, picking nits). The difference was, conversion to digital TV transmission freed up a lot of frequencies which got auctioned off, bringing in many more $ than the converter box coupons cost. Which boxes BTW, could not, by law output HD TV, only down converted SD.

Sigh.

If I had a dollar for every time folks got riled up over some crackpot, half-baked idea that never had a chance to make it out of committee, or some completely misconstrued interpretation by some random innernet guy of something completely innocuous, or some throwaway comment by some random state legislator/city councilor/HOA type/fictitious person, I'd be a gazillionaire.

I'm sure it's not just car enthusiasts, but as a long-time car enthusiast I've been reading for forty years now how all old cars are about to be banned, how airbags/smog equipment/5 mph bumpers/random paranoia will be mandatory retrofits, etc., etc., etc. Welcome to 1978! You'll pardon my skepticism if I don't get too worked up until there's an actual bill to be voted on or admin rule that means what the author sez it means. Forty years! Entire technology empires have risen and fallen in a quarter of that time.

Sure, maybe it's a conspiracy to lure us all into a false sense of complacency, but I'd sure like someone to explain how all of these conspiracies seem to have morphed into multigenerational long-game scenarios. Maybe there'll be FEMA camps on the space ark.

In a graphic illustration of this cozy relationship, a former Google lawyer now on DOJ staff has decided that all songwriters will be subject to a consent decree that imposes compulsory licensing on songwriters. This is a complex issue, but essentially songwriters will have no option to withdraw from ASCAP and BMI in order to negotiate their own royalty rates. Google (and Youtube, etc) can reproduce any song they like as often as they like without permission and only pay a court ordered mandatory licensing rate.

Azure is #2 in the cloud war for dominance already, and the question is likely when, not if, they'll overtake Amazon. They simply have too many variables in their favor - Azure Active Directory, Office 365, etc - it just makes more sense for enterprises than AWS does long-term.

Howevaaa.... nobody is capable of self-foot-shooting quite like MS. So there's always a chance they completely soil the laundry.

Serious question, aren't "real" car companies basically moving in this direction? I thought with how they were treating their electronics that they all but make it impossible for independent car repair shops or people at home from being able to repair things, thereby allowing monopoly based pricing for repairs that you see almost across the board in the USA in every part of the economy anymore.

They've definitely had their share of SAS-type revenue streams (which I hate with a passion), and the whole walled-garden bit certainly isn't about selling more consumer devices. I think they see it as a potentially lucrative market that they could be a player in, and they've got the deep pockets to disrupt pretty much any market they set their minds to.

On demand works much better in urban areas also. If the future is driverless cars, there's going to be a fleet providing a service and many others who own their own. All that really changes is the experience. Recent rumors were Apple wasn't going to make a car, but focus on autonomous technology. Does McLaren have technology that would align with anything for a consumer car? I'm sure they have patents, but nothing stands out to me as cutting edge. (And Tesla has already said other car companies can use their patents.)

LinkedIn notifications in Windows will be a special kind of hell (http://www.microsofttranslator.com/BV.aspx?ref=IE8Activity&a=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2016%2F12%2F8%2F 13889970%2Fmicrosoft-linkedin-notifications-hell-windows-10)

LinkedIn exists in a strange place. It’s a professional social network most everyday people are a part of, but only a core group of recruiters, sales professionals, and wildly opportunist industry climbers appear to use it daily. It has immense value — Microsoft paid $26 billion for it, because a network of more than 400 million professionals could help Microsoft compete with the likes of Salesforce, SAP, and Oracle. It also represents the kind of social data goldmine Microsoft has lacked, one comprised of the core demographic of the company’s products and services.

So, context: I'm an IT industry analyst. I'm currently covering several things, and one is AI.

So, rant: I cannot believe the amount of companies calling us saying they want "figure out a way" to use Alexa in their workplace. Are you MAD? Do you know that these VPA/AI/ML systems (Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, and to a lesser extent Cortana) retain and sell your data? You want your company data to exist in some mega repository to be mined and sold for advertising? It's a black box and you have NO CLUE who has access to your data, or how much those microphones are recording, or what services they're federated with.

Come on.

P.S. This rant was officially AAPL vs. AMZN vs. GOOG vs. MSFT

Chatbots are the 'next big thing' in banking technology. Several banks have enabled this functionality on Alexa. There is also Kasisto (http://kasisto.com/)which is interesting. It is a spin off venture from SRI International which is the company that initially developed what is now Siri.

Yes, but it's kinda inbred with my Android phone, tablet, etc. as well as working on the teams that incorporated Google search and the GMail beta. Keep in mind that my brain had many lobes since I work on Mac, M$FT, Google and Linux platforms. Does that make me schizo? ;) :D

I've got a buddy who's a software engineer at Amazon, stopped by a coworker's apartment when they were beta testing Alexa quite a while back. Greeted him at the door with 'Alexa, get me two Segways right away'. His coworker has a Prime Now account, so by the time they finished yukking it up about his need to implement some security it was too late to cancel, and he had to get an RMA.

Unfortunately true, I may have bought my last Macbook Pro. I'm looking for something to process large image files and maybe short videos in Photoshop. Something with features and performance from THIS decade. Also unfortunate is the fact that Windows machines no longer have the advantage of being less expensive than a Mac. :irked:

They still have that advantage because they have so many more options. The cheapest Macbook is $1000. Plenty of Windows 10 laptops for less.

I don't think the power users have ever driven Apple's market. For most of their history being a little under-powered just came with the territory for OSX users.

Actual usage as demonstrated by web statistics don't appear affected so far. OSX reached an all time high of 11.6% of desktop web traffic last month according to statcounter.

I'm not saying it won't happen. With so many ways to casually consume the Internet desktop usage continues to decline. As that happens power users will naturally become a larger percentage of that market. It's just a question of whether it will really matter at that point.
