Apparently mainstream popularity outside racing doesn't carry much weight with those that actually show up at the IMS. :gomer:

Associated Press - IndyCar's most popular driver heard fans' displeasure Saturday when her comments blaming a poor qualifying performance on her car's setup were broadcast over the racetrack public address system.

Interesting comments to that article....

She's hot! Who cares what place she comes in?

She's a chick for Christ's sakes. Like she would EVER place First. David Letterman should be ashamed for even sponsoring this.

All these races are such a waste of gasoline and polluting for no good reason.

Get a desk job Danica....you can't drive!

Nice. I wonder if she thinks throwing her team under the bus actually helps her in some way. Way to go Indianer!

Crowd? What crowd?

"I say one confident thing out there, that it's not me, and everybody boos me," she said. "I don't know, maybe they were booing me before, but some of them were probably cheering for me before. I'm not a different driver than I was five years ago."
http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/racing/indycar/news/story?id=5210730

She isn't unique to this fault, but why do drivers rip their team for bad performances? Part of me feels if you are effusive in your praise when things go well then there shouldn't be a problem to express frustration, but another part of me feels nothing good comes from blame, put your head down and keep working.

Slightly different quote:

"Shoot, I say one confident thing out there and everybody boos me. I'm blown away," said Patrick, who never started worse than 10th in five previous Indy starts. "These people, I mean, I don't know, maybe they all booed me before. I would think that some of them cheered for me before, and I'm not a different driver than I was five years ago."

Maybe that's the real problem.

Princess Permapout has developed quite a sense of being entitled to success hasn't she? If she actually ever gets to NASCAR with that attitude the fans are going to be chucking beer cans and buckets of chicken at her without bothering to drink or eat from them first.

I like it that a couple of rookie girls out-qualified her. She won't even win the female oval championship this year.

Same driver as she was five years ago? Yes.
Same power advantage from the engine? No.

The set up sucks? Rick Mears had a few bad set ups in his time, but he had that thing, oh, what's it called... input? I get the impression from this that she's not exactly Prost-like in her approach to working with her engineer. One can picture her engineer trying to translate "scary" into how to correct her set up while she goes off and complains to the media.

Bottom line, top drivers don't rip their teams in public. Schumacher had a **** box that first year at Ferrari, but kept his public comments to "we have some work to do" and "not the reliability that we need just yet." Surprisingly, the team rallied around him - go figure.

Still, I feel the need to point out that the same people who (rightly) booed her today would cheer on Foyt if he was saying worse about his crew. Freaking gomers.:shakehead

Yep...go super simsim! First time on what I imagine is a terrifying super speedway and she out-qualifies the world's first ever fourth place victor!

The set up sucks?

Maybe the mechanics took Tony Kanaan's set up off her car and put it back on his? ;) A girl never knows how petulant and mean those boys can be when she's not at her Peak for them.

When it is all said and done, after she scoots off to cabs, we will find out that at some point the IRL stopped giving her the spinners and she had do do with the same equipment as the rest of the boys and girls.

When your series runs on floor-it-and-turn, she may have a point. :\

No clue though as to how the Princess is with feedback. Methinks not well.

An article in the local fish wrap today mentioned that only 4 members of her crew appeared with her for photos post qualifying.

This is nothing new... glad the crowd is finally recognizing it.... I love when they tune into her team radio while shes bitching non stop about how bad the car is and then Jack MyRoot comes on saying shes giving valuable feedback to the engineers.

How bad the car is.... RHR doesn't seem to have a problem with it, I think the problem lies somewhere between the steering wheel and the fuel cell.

Maybe instead of selling individual seats, they are selling a section to each person that walks up to the ticket window. A section for $5, a tenderloin, a cooler with cheap beer, and you can boo Danica for free. How great is that? :gomer:

That top picture looks like the largest pole day crowd of the IRL era, and about equal to a practice day in the CART era WHEN IT WAS RAINING.

Tony Kanaan says he spent several hours on Saturday night encouraging his Andretti Autosport team-mate Danica Patrick to change her approach

Kanaan: Patrick must change attitude (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83846)

WTF, several hours....? What she needs is a smack in the back of the head and a plainly spoken tune up to her face from her boss. :shakehead If she'd have got that at the right moment in her life she wouldn't be suffering for optical rectumitis now.

I understand how you feel -- that if one is effusive with praise, s/he has the right to be liberal with criticism. However, there is an old addage that says "praise in public, criticize in private" so I agree with MichaelHatesFans that it's just good practice to nix the nastiness in public. Racing is a small world; you don't want to alienate people -- especially the people putting together your bucket of bolts before you throw it around corners at 200-something mph.

But part of her personality that people find attractive is when she gives Dan Wheldon a shove, smacks Jacques Lazier or tries to confront Ryan Briscoe.
