Texas gov. shoots, kills 'wily' coyote during jog
By JIM VERTUNO
Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press
updated 4:56 p.m. PT, Tues., April 27, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas - Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.

"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote," he said Tuesday.

Perry, a Republican running for a third full term against Democrat Bill White, is living in a private house in a hilly area southwest of downtown Austin while the Governor's Mansion is being repaired after a 2008 fire. A concealed handgun permit holder, Perry carries the pistol in a belt.

"I knew there were a lot of predators out there. You'll hear a pack of coyotes. People are losing small cats and dogs all the time out there in that community," Perry said.

"They're very wily creatures."

On this particular morning, Perry said, he was jogging without his security detail shortly after sunrise.

"I'm enjoying the run when something catches my eye and it's this coyote. I know he knows I'm there. He never looks at me, he is laser-locked on that dog," Perry said.

"I holler and the coyote stopped. I holler again. By this time I had taken my weapon out and charged it. It is now staring dead at me. Either me or the dog are in imminent danger. I did the appropriate thing and sent it to where coyotes go," he said.

Perry said the laser-pointer helped make a quick, clean kill.

"It was not in a lot of pain," he said. "It pretty much went down at that particular juncture."

Texas state law allows people to shoot coyotes that are threatening livestock or domestic animals. The dog was unharmed, Perry said.

Perry's security detail was not required to file a report about the governor discharging a weapon, said Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange.

"People shoot coyotes all the time, snakes all the time," Mange said. "We don't write reports."

The governor left the coyote where it fell.

"He became mulch," Perry said.

take your pick folks... Goodhair "charged" a coyote which was "staring dead at [him]," because coyotes have a habit of staring down large loud humans charging them...

there's also the mental image of the gov jogging w/ a laser sighted .380

oh yea, "they're very wily creatures."

No fire sprinklers, though they were going to be installed as part of a $10 million dollar renovation in 2008. Just sayin' ;)

Mansion is now being repaired for $22 million and half of that is Federal ARRA stimulus money.

Politicians are almost always tools, and in a very dark way, I'd laugh my ass off if it turned out to be someone's pet schnauzer (named Mulch?), but around here in blissful suburbia, coyotes are taking pet dogs with some regularity. People are getting stalked while walking their pets, approached when Mulchie is on a leash, fences are getting breached (they've been jumping over them to get the dogs), etc., etc.

I think the county has been quietly getting rid of them, since I haven't heard them "pack up" last winter and attacks are down this year.

The stalking stories are pretty spooky.

We have a coyote that we see running through our back yard now and then. He is a cute little guy.

How about instead of killing innocent animals we declare hunting seasons on politicians. I mean, seriously, their overpopulation has become a serious problem, and culling is the only humane thing to do.

Coyotes are typically as timid as bunnies. Any dog over 10lbs is capable of scaring off an entire pack .
We see packs stroll through our neighborhood quite often. They keep moving, never stopping to snoop around.
We had one accidentally jump over our back yard fence last summer only to be scared ****less when my German Shepherd came tearing out of her doggy door towards it at full gallop. The coyote literally ran into the fence 3 times before it remembered it had to jump over it.

I read an article (linked off of the 'Weird Urban Areas' thread I posted) about coyotes in LA who have a wolf gene which is making them more aggressive, but the ones we have in FL are nothing more than tall, mangy squirrel like things.

In a separate question-and-answer session with reporters, Perry said BP has "historically had a very good safety record from my perspective."

After a reporter pointed out that an explosion at BP's Texas City refinery killed 15 workers in 2005, Perry acknowledged the company has been under scrutiny for its safety record.

Sure, if a meteor hit that rig, or a category 5 hurricane, I would agree it was an Act of God, but I doubt that is what set it off (and in my mind even an ordinary lighting strike would not qualify. something like that rig ought to be engineered to withstand fairly ordinary type conditions that could be expected).

I think it is fairly obvious that it was not an AOG but Perry is using that phrase to white wash BP.

MOSCOW – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin fired darts from a crossbow at a gray whale off Russia's Far Eastern coast on Wednesday in the latest in a series of man-versus-nature stunts designed to cultivate the image of a macho leader.

Putin held his balance in a rubber boat that was being tossed around in choppy waters off the Kamchatka Peninsula, and eventually hit the whale with a special arrow designed to collect skin samples.

"I hit it at the fourth try!" a beaming Putin, kitted out in black-and-orange waterproof suit and black beanie, yelled to a camera crew from the boat.
