I heard about this on the radio on the way home from work. Of course, being a scientist, I am excited about the prospect of using the scientific method to debunk non-science.

Help fight supernatural thinking and the oppression of women, just by showing your cleavage!

(For those who want a more serious explanation of the event, please go here: http://www.blaghag.com/2010/04/quick-clarification-about-boobquake.html)

"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Sedighi is Tehran's acting Friday prayer leader.

I have a modest proposal.

Sedighi claims that not dressing modestly causes earthquakes. If so, we should be able to test this claim scientifically. You all remember the homeopathy overdose?

Time for a Boobqauke.

The comment was a good laugh till, common sense kicked in.

Makes you wonder how come quakes were not noticed in the old times when all those paintings of naked women in all museums and art galleries where created.

We need to look for two step changes in the number of earthquakes per day to see if the Iranian clerics hypothesis was correct:

Step change #1 - A statistically significant increase in the number of earthquakes on April 26th as compared to April 25th.

Step change #2 - A statistically significant drop in the number of earthquakes on April 27th as compared to April 26th.

By "statistically significant step change", I mean something on the order of Indy 500 TV ratings before 1995 as compared to 1996 and after.

I have not searched for the data, but I suspect that the hypothesis is not supported by the data.

That's a fantastic album, I preordered it and it was on my doorstep in glorious vinyl on the day of release! And that is the best song on that album IMHO although it never seems to rate a mention in reviews.

Uh, nobody noticed because they were in the museums and art galleries ogling them? ;)

(And they thought *they* were the ones making the earth move.) ;) ;) ;)

And the beat goes on. In further news the Iranian police are going to start arresting women who are tan as exposure to the sun is evidence of ignoring the dress code.

If the world was at risk from exposed boobies it surely would have exploded during the late 60's. :gomer: For that matter the Oregon Country Fair must pose a deadly seismic threat. :D

What kind of global disaster would that bring...? Thunder that sounds vaguely like show tunes? A rain of feather boas? The sky turns mauve?

Do yourself a favour and have a listen to her stuff. If you like old school soul (Aretha, Otis, James brown etc.) you'll love Sharon Jones.

Jeebus, I hope not. They're usually associated with things going up, not down...

I notice as I am updating podcast on my i-Pod that last night's Fresh Air show on NPR had a 27 minute segment with her.
