The fastest nine cars in traditional pole day qualifying will advance to a special 90-minute end-of-day session during which the drivers will have to prove themselves again.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m., those nine will take a four-lap run at the pole, and they'll have a second chance later if they choose and time allows. The order in which they'll be on the track will be determined by how they fared earlier in the day.

The fastest participant from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. will choose first. All nine will be required to participate but are guaranteed they will start the race no worse than ninth. If weather keeps the extra session from being completed, the race lineup will be set by the earlier times.

Sounds like a good way to create some more crunched Dallara parts. They take people out of there on stretchers, ya know.

The qualifying format is the brainchild of Brian Barnhart, the 500's chief steward who is also the Indy Racing League's president of competition. He told AW that he's trying to create oval-track qualifying similar to the format that the IRL has found to be so successful on road courses and street circuits over the past couple years. On those types of tracks, only the six-fastest drivers advance to final-round qualifying to take a shot at earning the pole.

"Our fans really seem to like it," he said.

Perhaps IMS should use a version of the business plan of the Underwear Gnomes moving forward.

The Underpants Gnomes are businessmen of sorts, and they know a lot about corporations, and explain them to the boys in their underground lair. Their business plan is as follows:

Phase 1: Collect Underpants
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit

Phase 1: Dump FTG
Phase 2: Dump Barnfart
Phase 3: Profit

Unbelievable. This is the definition of a goat rodeo. How ironic. ;) I am afraid to look over there, but I assume there are still lemmings lapping this stuff up?

So popular with the fans?

Should we nominate him for an episode of "Undercover Boss"?

It would be funny if it weren't so annoying, on so many levels.

The only tradition left at Indy is the idiocy of their management.

That's funny, watch it rain all that weekend. Then what? Line up the 500 by points?

This is so stupid, IRL are hurting for entries, and buy limiting qualifying to one weekend, you will never get the second weekend only guys anymore (the Billy Boats, Richie Hearns of the past) to fill the grid. :shakehead
