3D displays are the big news at CES this year and the electronics companies are making a big bet that 3D is the next big thing. Hot on the heals of Avatar's box office success, and news that some people get vicious headaches from 3D, it's not clear to me whether people will want to watch at home with 3D glasses, particularly if they just bought a new HDTV relatively recently.

TV makers bet big on 3D, payoff uncertain (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN0616965320100107?type=marketsNews)

Why? To keep sales moving (http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/chris-dannen/techwatch/why-are-lcd-tv-sales-still-booming)

Discovery, Sony, Imax to launch 3D network (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=62118)

Right, or Quadraphonic audio which was hyped by the industry as the next big thing but was stillborn in an apathetic market. Most people had only recently gone to stereo and they weren't going to junk their nice new stereo to go quad. It took nearly 30yrs and 5.1 movie sound tracks to make a dent in stereo.

The day they can make 3D work without the glasses is when it will get interesting to me.

Yep, but I think we'll have to wait for a holodeck. :gomer:

I think the whole concept is ridiculous. Can you imagine 3D photographs? Of course not...it works with animated cartoons but that is it.

I can only see out of one eye at a time. I dread the day when, say, the Super Bowl is 3D only; I can barely see anything because it's fuzzy and the headache I get is stupendous.

I'm torn on this one.

On the one hand, I'm an old View-Master geek with around 2500 pre-1950 scenic reels. Especially with the excellent Kodachrome, there's something compelling and immediate about the impact of, say, a 1939 NY World's Fair or 1940s Los Angeles 3D image that isn't there in 2D.

OTOH, it's just one more distraction to convince studios that there's no need to spend money on actual screenwriters. Honestly, 99% of the stuff on TV and at the theater seems like it was written by trained monkeys. Sign a big name, throw in some CGI, fire up a big marketing campaign, and nobody will notice, right? :yuck:

The electronics companies need something to sell, but IMO this won't catch on until there is a lot more good content out there. Look how long it took for HDTV to finally make it. I'm getting ready to buy a new entertainment system, and this doesn't even make me wonder if I should wait for 3D.

4 wall sized displays
+ Wii interface
+ 3D TV tech
= ghetto holodeck. :gomer:

Which has historically meant mainstream sports and porn. Care to guess what the highest grossing 3D film was prior to Avatar...?

I love the irony-the porno spokespersons name is Mr Baptist.

Would a comparison between the quantity/quality of technology advances generated by or for the racing and porn industries even be close? :tony:
