Izod is in as the Gomer League title sponsor for less money per year than a lot of second rate drivers made in CART back when people still actually wore Izod. It's on Autosport. I'm too lazy to go back and get the link. Lot's of marketing speak....

This is the big news I have been waiting for. This is beyond huge. This is bigger than the discovery of America, DNA, electricity and beer. I am so excited that I just wet myself. OMG, IZOD, this is great. Where did I put that defibulator? Finally, all you cartisans will have to kowtow to the great hulman temple, as my series has now passed NASCAR and F1 as Tony has previously foretold. How does that crow taste all you street car losers? :tony:

IZOD, I watched two of the videos today, seems they are more interested in showing Crashes instead of racing, IMO, any sponsor of the IRL has been a kiss of death for that brand. Special ED looked like a Dork sitting in the chair during one of the videos.:yuck:

Is that the little alligator thing? How long before we have a "name the alligator" mascot contest and slap it all over the place. Izzy Izod in a helmet! The 2 seat ride along alligator car. The wearing of the green Izod jacket in Mindy Victory Lane before the milk is handed over. Alligator fireproof racing shoes. Live alligator on a leash in the paddock. Free Izod polos blown up into the stands. Ten mil per season? What's that, 3 more teams guaranteed?

Le Mans-style starts with drivers running for their lives as live alligators are released on the grid! Bunch the spectators up in the most telegenic stands by firing live alligators into the others!

Two words- alligator tenderloin!

As much fun as the gator branding would be for the league, the gator logo is now the property of Lacoste and not Izod.

I'm pretty sure it is not even close to that. The official announcement only said it was a "multi-year, multi-million dollar" deal, and they were very coy when pressed for details.

From the announcement festival:

Q. Can you give us some of the details in terms of the length of the agreement, the amount of money, how it may be allocated?

MIKE KELLY: We're committed to six years plus. We assume everything will be going then. If so, we'll exercise an option. But we're committed to six years right now.

On the money, we don't disclose as a corporation the terms of our deal. Anybody who was around in '09 - I guess all of you were -you saw as a brand we were committed even as the apparel sponsor in our activation, what we spent, while often recorded wrong, was certainly well into the millions. We activated aggressively in major markets and minor markets. We went into markets before a race, three weeks in advance, and we would blitz that market with advertising, with cinema, with additional spot TV, in addition to the media that we were buying, as one of the most aggressive buyers I believe on both ESPN, ABC and VERSUS.

This year as the title sponsor, in the years to come, we're committed to that and then some. We expect to be very aggressive in our spending.

THE MODERATOR: Yes, the specifics, exactly.

TERRY ANGSTADT: I'll certainly say what we can say out of respect of our new partner and their position as a public company. I know Mike has spoken to the term. We're so proud of a six-year term with an option. So I think everyone would recognize in today's landscape, that's just an unbelievable commitment of confidence and the willingness to build for the future. So the term is fantastic.

It is multi-million dollars. It is really across a number of platforms. We are going to downstream funds to each and every car participating in the series. There's a significant activation budget that will go toward targeted markets and certainly at venues so we can activate in and around each race market. There is a very big commitment to each broadcast partner so they showcase the new relationship in an appropriate way.

So it really is, it really hits across every important area you would want, a very well, I think, put together and integrated deal as it came together. So it really is something that will raise the entire economy of the IZOD IndyCar Series and our key partners, team owners, drivers, venues, broadcast partners. It's just outstanding on every measure.

Draw your own conclusions...

Izod officials may be a little off-the-wall, but they’re not crazy enough to sign a contract that isn’t loaded with out-clauses. Sources familiar with the deal said if certain metrics concerning number of races held annually, TV ratings, attendance and car count among other things aren’t met, there are triggers in the contract that will allow Izod to decrease its financial pay-out or opt out of the contract all together.

Now there's a surprise.

from the looks of the piles of leftover Izod-IndyCar Series apparel at Carson Pirie Scott in downtown Indy this week—long-sleeve shirts marked down from $60 to less than $5—I’d say both sides have their work cut out for them.

I have to admit, I never in a million years figured they would be able to get a paying title sponsor.

Define paying. If $10 million includes what they plan to spend on activation then it is almost nothing.

On a related note, IZOD certainly has a knack for picking winners. They bought naming rights for Byrne Arena, err Continental Arena, err empty arena. The state had let the place get very run down. The Devils moved to The Rock. The Nets are moving to Brooklyn... or is it Newark? Doesn't matter, literally no one watches them and if they wanted to they couldn't because construction at failed Xanadu shopping center and the new Giants stadium next door makes it impossible to get there and park. Oh, but there are concerts and the circus and stuff. Well, no not really. The Rock, and MSG are gobbling those up in an over saturated market.

But I'll give IZOD credit. They did some nice signage and cleaned the place up a bit. Better than NJ bureaucrats could do.

Did I mention the nice signage?
