For those interested, marchiones is in the last few segments of his five year plan for Chrysler. It started at 11. Some interesting things I think. Some processes that were dropped by Daimler are being picked back up.

this page is updating with each segment released.

I skimmed through the link, but will come back later as the car reporter on CNBC said that the Chrysler meeting will go until 7pm. The one cool thing I noticed in there is a reference to a diesel Wrangler. A strange powerplant option, but I certainly hope that this means that Fiat is serious about bringing diesels to the US market.

Yeah, I've been monitoring in hopes to catch that 'key' announcement of a sweet clean diesel/hybrid/electric that will make a media splash. So far it looks like turbos are making a big come back.

The site I linked is very keen on hearing about the 200C flagship car.

I'll bet that anyone forced to attend the 6hr presentation is pissed. :saywhat:

This may be a designer's joke.

One time I was using one of these: http://s3.amazonaws.com/asl_db5e2623e84bbb7eacc599465ee904ab/resources/images/media/1157_17287_Sharpie_Accent_Highlighter_150b11e5cb10 _zoom.jpgand I looked at the cap (it was closed, not open like this one) and thought 'You've got to be kidding!' Then I decided it must have been a molding defect, because there is no way that design would get past everybody into production. Then I looked at the others in the office. Same thing. It really did get into production. If you have one, take a close look at it with the cap on. Rotate it slowly. Yes, they really did that! This photo is good enough, you might be able to see it if you imagine the cap on it.

Major designer's joke! I still can't believe it made it into production.

Sharpie highlighter - whatever the joke is, I'm not getting it.

You looked at it while rotating it and you didn't notice a familiar shape?

Might have something to do with this (http://www.chacha.com/question/can-you-get-high-off-of-a-sharpie)

or it might not :D

If you look at one in person, it's easy to see, but the green one is actually a pretty good 2D image. That distinctive arch shape on the cap which is sweeping off to the lower left tapers to only about 1/3 of the way from the end of the cap on the opposite side. Then it sweeps back to where you see it here. The little pictures at the bottom also show it, although rather small. It's modeled on a form found in nature, with a function similar to an oil control ring on a piston.

Pretty amazing it's on a mass market product.

If Mr. Sparklehappy's anterior extremity were to be turned down on a lathe to allow him to wear a tiny little fez or assorted snap-on attachments you might have a point, but otherwise, y'know, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Get back to me when the cap starts to look like a Series 1 E-Type.

Not really strange at all. They've been exported for years, we just can't buy them here. The Liberty CRD was a failure because they put the VM Motori diesel unit in the top line Liberty and charged an extra $5K for it.

It will be interesting to see how it goes. They didn't seem to have much luck with the "German Engineering" angle when Diamler owned them so I'm not sure "Italian Engineering" is going to play in Peoria. I suppose an improved product line-up could make a world of difference, but there are still people who have nightmares about their Fiat experiences in the '70s and '80s.

Repackaging around lifestyles rather than ... whatever they were using before.

Thought that remark from the link was spot on. Outside of their line of freeway panzers Chrysler has the most confused, uninspired line-up in the industry.

No doubt about it. Their current lineup is uninspired, bland and boring with horrible material quality. My mom bought a '93 Eagle Vision Tsi when if first debuted and it was a better car than anything they've made in the past 9 years and that was 16 years ago!!!!
I rented an '09 Sebring for my Atlanta trip last month and the list of things I hated about it was long...nothing on the 'good' list.

I was specifically interested in hearing about the new Pentastar engine. This is the engine that has been in development for many years and rumored to be refined to the point of a Japanese engine. Also, they claim that they will re-populate the American engineering group that Daimler/Cerberus let go.

Fiat is saying all the right things at this point...time will tell.

I'm looking forward to the next Charger which is said to be very cool.

too little too late imo. all their best engineers, doctorates, dual masters, etc. are long gone. the only ones left are the ones who weren't marketable enough to leave for an equivalent gig.

Agreed, the best have left, but top tier talent was never there in the first place. My first hand observation has been that all three companies did a great job of driving off the best and the brightest going all the way back to the 60's. The obsessive focus on conformity, the pay scale that started low and topped out quickly and the stodgy approach to new products isn't the stuff that attracts, or retains, star players. What they lacked in top quality people they made up for in sheer numbers though. :D

Chrysler did manage something profound when they opened Auburn Hills, they achieved the shortest new product cycle in the industry. Shortly thereafter Benz and then Cerberus dismantled that organization to squeeze more money out.
