Early TV childrens comedy show host Soupy Sales has taken his last pie to the face. His daily noon show started at WXYZ in Detroit in 1953 and went network wide ABC in 1959 and became hugely popular. His humor was aimed at kids but was sophisticated enough that he had a huge adult following as well.

Growing up I watched his show on WNEW in NYC in the mid-60s.

Those were the days...

I honest to God didn't realize that he got his start as an entertainer for children.

Me neither.

Me neither.

Maybe because I was more of a Captain Kangaroo and Kukla, Fran and Ollie type of guy (and no Mr. Rogers for me).

Watched him as a kid in suburban NYC. The pies to the face were hysterical to this 5 year old.

In the early 80s he was on the same NY radio station as Stern. Their feud was legendary but sadly Soupy was overmatched. One day Stern cut the strings to Soupy's piano and IIRC Soupy quit in disgust. Their careers went different directions from there.

(Never a Stern fan BTW)

I see that his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has the expected flowers. And one pie placed neatly in the middle. Looks like lemon merengue from the picture.

That's nice. :)
