General Motors has reached an agreement to offload Hummer onto China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, with Tengzhong taking an 80 percent stake and a private investor consuming the rest.

Nice thread title. I'm guessing this will mean fewer wealthy douchebags navigating the wilds of strip mall suburbia in them.

related to the creation of the next generation of more fuel-efficient vehicles
Nothing says fuel-efficient like Hummer.

I wonder if they realized they don't make H1's anymore?

150 million for a brand that has sold fewer than 9000 vehicles this year. The new owners must be as stupid as their target demographic.

I'd love to see GM's total net cost of the whole Hummer fiasco.

Personally, I would have worked in "happy ending" to the title, but that's just nitpicking.

Reports today say the Hummer deal with the Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd. of China is off. Unless another company steps up quickly GM will wind down production.

“One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest Hummer, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for HUMMER along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed,” said John Smith GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. “GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.”

Smart move. With the HMMV being replaced, the brand is going to fade even with the morons who think their H2/3 is something besides an extra ugly GM SUV.

And more time in a wind tunnel than a Hummer.

In the near term people will be seeing a lot of the M-ATV that's being rushed into Afghanistan based on their results with larger MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) in Iraq. In the longer term there's a big competition on right now to build the next light tactical vehicle.

Oshkosh has really ramped up their production of these. I used to see maybe one flatbed (2 M-ATV's) per week. I bet I've seen 6-7 since Monday.

Nuthin' like war to save or create jobs!

Of course, it's only a short term fix. Wasting a country's potential capital on stuff that goes "boom" is slow suicide. Countries that make useful stuff will win in the end. Think Soviets vs. U.S., except now we are the Soviets and the Chinese are the Americans. :saywhat:

MRAPs and M-ATVs are must suited for counter-insurgency. On the high end of warfar they are not much safer than canvas doored HUMVEEs. They wont stop 20+mm or tank rounds from penetrating. It will be interesting what they pick.
