Anderson is a good example of what the concentration of industry in small spaces in midwestern states did to the small cities. At one time there were reportedly as many as 20,000 hourly and salaried GM jobs at Guide Lamp and Delco Remy in Anderson, a city of 50,000. In essence, an unskilled blue collar workforce was imported to get the job done. By the 1980's, their children had no hope of making half us much money with no benefits, if they could find jobs at all. That high concentration of relatively ignorant, unskilled people with union attitudes was exacerbated when things got ugly and the smart folks went somewhere nicer. The not so smart folks were stuck.

What is left is a city which has no reason to exist and a largely unskilled population who have self-selected de-evolution and misery.
