08-22-09, 08:14 PM
Powers took the turn much wider than Viso did. Powers was well on the rumble strip as he came over the rise, Viso was a full car width inside. The yellow flags were waving but if you look at the timing Phillipe spun at 8 seconds, Viso hit him six seconds later and Powers hit him 3 seconds after that. Nobody had time to do much in the way of lifting or anything else.

Professional drivers ought to be able to respond in a LOT less than nine seconds!

On the other hand, we can't see the flag station at corner entry, so they may well both have gone in with no yellow because the corner workers took several seconds to get the flag out.

FCYTravis
08-22-09, 10:17 PM
The problem is the way the corner's configured over the blind rise. Yes, as a driver you might see a yellow flag and you know something's there... but what, and where? You crest the hill and have approximately a half-second to decide where to point the car.

Stuff like that happens sometimes...

I'd be more concerned about the mechanism of injury. You really aren't going *that* fast coming over the top of 3A.

Methanolandbrats
08-22-09, 10:27 PM
****, the first guy swerved, the second guy had a couple seconds to react, but just plowed in. Long, long way from a "Zanardi" incident at those speeds. And why did that hippie ride-buyer spin there? Answer...because he sucks. I'm glad they're ok, but it's just more IRL ********.

FCYTravis
08-22-09, 10:34 PM
Watch the video closely. Power swerved hard right at the same point Viso did. But Power's line was farther to driver's left than Viso's line - he was all the way out on the rumble strips. Starting from a point farther to the left, Power simply couldn't turn fast enough.

NismoZ
08-22-09, 10:43 PM
Maybe he was that far out because of a reaction to the waving yellow? Sometimes drivers just guess wrong.:(

FCYTravis

In track and field a pure reaction time (leaving the block and therefore letting up the pressure switch in it) to a starting gun of .120 second is excellent and the best runners can come close to the .100 second reaction considered the minimum reaction time for a true start.

In sportsman drag racing a reaction time of .500 is often used to determine a green light start. Anything faster is automatically a red light. In a braking reaction time simulator .300 is considered excellent and .220 starts raising eyebrows.

Some years (thanks to the credit meltdown I'm currently having one) half of my income is from being a consultant to underwriters on multimillion dollar deals.

In the big leagues, insurance works a bit different from when you're shopping for car insurance. The underwriters are a LOT more involved in what can and cannot happen.

Viso reacted. Power didn't. 1 second is an eternity in an accident situation.

But Power did react.

Watch the slo-mo closely - at the last second, you see the nose of Power's car aim right just as Viso's did. But unlike Viso, he was too far to driver's left to be able to turn away.

The difference is that Viso picked the tight line, Power the wide. Neither had any way of knowing, coming up over the crest, where the car was. All they saw was a yellow. Viso got lucky, Power didn't.

Philippe could just as easily have stalled toward the inside of the turn and we'd be talking about Viso being the one to T-bone Philippe.

Looks like Power caught Nelson's right front suspension which twisted Will to the left and increased the duration of the impact. Longer duration equals greater time for compression fractures to occur.

She has spun and crashed a bit, but more dangerous is her unpredictability. Ask anyone who's driven with her and they'll tell you that she rarely takes the same line through a corner twice. One of her former car owners has been pretty open publicly about what a disaster her driving is.

"I never really had a chance today. We were hit from behind on the very first lap, went into the gravel and that was pretty much the end of our race. We tried a few things as the day went on, but there was not much we could and I didn't want to cause problems for the drivers that are competing in the championship fulltime. It was a tough day, for sure."

Just to make sure oo understands, he's ^^^^ NOT joking.

Seems its like a pair of twin girls. They were both cute little babies and kids but when they hit their teens one became a stunning girl-the envy of most and the other became an ugly and obese alcoholic. One day in the prime of her life the hot one is accidentally killed when a new manager removes OH & S Protection thinking he is doing the right thing for his business. The hideous girl decides to take advantage and manages to distance her own friends whilst trying to reach out and claim her sister's friends. The other sister's friends are not interested and so the hideous one is left friendless and watching Versus.

The only thing I can say about the current Dallara Indy car is that they are freakin' tanks. Even their ginormous front wings can take a beating. Why they have to look so damn ugly. 200 more ponies and less downforce it would be very much as we knew it.

I was surprised to see a KK/Vasser vignette during the pre-show. I had to laugh as they were at Vasser winery....picturing the gomerotti crying about what their IRL has turned into.

Philippe: Power thought he killed me in crash

By Curt Cavin
Posted: August 25, 2009

Physical injuries aside, a large part of Will Power's pain was emotional, according to the IndyCar Series driver he struck in last weekend's event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
"He told me he thought he killed me," said series rookie Nelson Philippe, whose car was helplessly sideways in the middle of the track as E.J. Viso and then Power crested a hill.

After Viso's car grazed Philippe's, he turned his head just enough to catch a glimpse of Power's yellow car coming.
"A huge bumblebee about to hit me," Philippe said. "From then it was lights out until they were taking me out of the ambulance at the (track's) infield medical center."
Power and Philippe suffered concussions. The brake pedal of his car went through Philippe's left foot, requiring a plate and five screws in surgery. Philippe also broke his right leg.
The impact was near the nose of Philippe's car. Had it been in the side, he fears he would have lost his legs as Alex Zanardi did in a CART race in 2001.
Power suffered two fractured vertebrae in his lower back, an injury similar to Vitor Meira's in the Indianapolis 500. Meira is expected to be out four months.
Power's helmet struck something inside his cockpit -- likely the steering wheel -- injuring his mouth. He lost two upper front teeth, leading Philippe to call him "Willie Bob" during a wheelchair visit to Power's room at Santa Rosa (Calif.) Memorial Hospital, where they remain.
"The (crash) was pretty hard on Will because he remembers the whole thing, but we can laugh about it now," Philippe said.
Officials from Power's team asked that he not be interviewed until at least today. He is receiving large doses of pain medication.
Philippe said doctors have told him his foot and leg will need two months of recovery.
"I'm in pretty good spirits," he said. "I'm looking forward to getting back in the car."

More on Will-

Power’s father Bob last night told The Chronicle his son’s injuries were worse than first thought.

“The information we have is still a little vague at the moment,” Mr Power said.

“We do know the injuries were a little worse than what they first thought and they have found more fractures in his back.

“From what we’ve been told they are waiting to make a decision on if or when they will operate on him.”

Bob Power said his son was conscious and moving his arms and legs.

“He’s pretty heavily drugged, but he is conscious. It’s just a waiting game at the moment.”

Power’s mother Marg was last night preparing to head to the United States to be with her son.

“Marg is organising herself to head over straight away. Will has been asking for her,” Mr Power said.

“She is a nurse so I think she will be the most helpful one to head over now.”

I DVR the time slot and then fast forward the pre-race. Their pre-race is an hour long! I stopped when they showed Powers accident, which by the way, a reminder that it is still the IRL...Bob Jenkins memtions the accident and then says "the good news is that both drivers are absolutly fine and will fully recuperate" but adds, "the latest on their injuries are...a compression fracture to Powers' L2 and L4, concussion, open fracture on Nelson with broken...etc". Wait a sec...I thought he just said they were 'fine'.
Then I stopped on the KK/Vasser segment with a tour of their vineyards.

I almost threw something at the TV when Jenkins made that comment about the drivers being "absolutely fine." Last time I checked, "absolutely fine" does not mean that hospitals, concussions, broken bones, surgery and pain meds are involved. :flame:

The Vasser/KK wineries must be how the poor people live. :\

Someone should also have told the Versus promo announcer the proper pronunciation of Fran-key-tti. He was pronouncing it Fran-shi-tti.

I was actually surprised by how much green I saw in some of the quals shots. I've been by that area in June before and the entire area is brown (or golden as they call it in Cali...the Golden State).

Alrighty, Power has a broken back, is still in the hospital and needs to meet with Doc Trammell to determine a rehab plan, but according to the team, he isn't done for the season?

"That hasn't been determined," team spokesman Merrill Cain said. "We just don't know yet. We don't want to speculate."

I asked the rather cute flight nurse on the chopper to Grant Trauma Center where the in flight music was. She asked what I would like to hear, and I said, "Good Night Saigon by that Billy Joel idiot." She turned and asked the other guy, "Have they given him anything for the pain yet?"
