Monitor question

Anyone here ever replaced a CCFL backlight on an LCD monitor? I've got a Dell 27" monitor that is 3yrs old that has got a dark shaded area at the bottom of the screen which I assume is a failed/failing CCFL tube. I use it for work & personal use so it's probably got close to 9000hrs on it. I'm assuming that if one tube has failed the rest won't be too far behind.

I was hoping the forever promised LED backlighting would have become common by now but LED backlit monitors have appeared even slower than LED backlit TV's. Hard to get eggcited about replacing this one with another that's going to need fixing inside of 3yrs, so I'd like to repair it. I really like the LED backlit TV and the LED tail lights on our car. No bulb replacements and no dimming over time.

I've often contemplated getting a savanah monitor, because of their small size and calm disposition. Nile monitors are also pretty commonly available, but they can be some mean b*stards, and I like my fingers too much...of course, green iguanas are very common and easier to handle than monitors, but they are less interesting to talk about and grow much bigger than most people expect...

Oh, wait....nope, don't know anything about replacing the bulbs in monitors... :D

Only monitor I know of that's big enough to eat a goat is a Komodo Dragon, but if you got one of those, you have a whole host of other problems that we haven't even touched on yet... :D

The Aussies think that monitors make for good BBQ, but they also think they're called Goanas. ;)

The important thing to remember when operating your monitor is to keep it almost totally submerged in water. Almost totally but not entirely wet is key to optimum performance. If by some unforseen act of God your monitor does get completely entirely wet, the warranty will be voided and you'll have to consult your nearest blacksmith for a replacement. With luck and preservation it is possible your ruined monitor may be of some value in the future.

Wish I could help. You definitely want to fix instead of replace at 27" -- the really good 27" models (Syncmaster) still go for a cool grand.

Thanks WB, I agree, but unless I can find the parts and do it myself replacement will be the only option. I have no spare and I can't shut down operations while it's out for repair. It's not dead yet so I have some time to look and ask around.

Aside from cost, replacement blows because that last thing I want is another large monitor with a CCFL backlight because it's an expensive 110 watt+ space heater that requires replacement of light tubes that are not readily available. :thumdown:
