Word out of Speedway, Indiana has the George family closing down the speedway after the 2011 IRl500. No more races and possibly the 500 will be the only IRl race in 2011.

Selling it I would believe, closing it down doesn't make sense to me.

Especially since both commercial and residential real estate markets have been all but hit by an asteroid in the last couple of years. Who in their right mind would convert it to another use in this market (heck, they could basically decide to quit anything but critical upkeep for the next 20 years until grandstands started falling down and turn a profit running nothing but the Nascar race).

You're 100% right yet it wouldn't be the first or last time that a family asset was sold at the bottom because of anger, panic or spite. Middle aged women that have been insulated from reality their entire lives and just woke up to massive losses in equities, real estate and cash flow from their various businesses are unpredictable by definition. We seem to be living in an era of perfect storms where the surreal and unthinkable become reality with depressing regularity.
