"Figher jets in a gymnasium" returns!

Of course, since the event is condensed like the rest of the IRL, maybe it now should be called just "mosquitoes in a broom closet".

One practice session and qualifying Friday afternoon. Race on Saturday evening. All the usual Futility Hiros return for more.

Of course, since the event is condensed like the rest of the IRL, maybe it . . . .

Helps keep the "car"nage down until race day when it really counts. VS likes it that way.

With nighttime lows around 80, enough humidity to make a water buffalo wince and the usual high chance of hellfire-and-brimstone thunderstorms, it oughta be a splendid weekend for futility.

I understand the folks at Philip Morris HQ have been passing out freebies at an even higher rate than normal this year. I've noticed almost no local promotion- the last few years they've crammed Danicle down our throats, but not even a fluff piece on the local 4:30 news yet. So accourse it'll be another sellout. :gomer:

It's basically the Philip Morris USA company picnic. I suspect they'd race there 3 or 4 times per year if PM wanted it that way.

Wasn't Nashville basically a company picnic for the local Firestone facility? That didn't last long.

Facility! Nashville is Bridgestone/Firestone's US headquarters.

(one of the most depressing matters I have ever handled in my legal carrer was going to the almost completely abandoned Firestone headquarters in Akron where only one or two departments had not yet been moved by Bridgestone to Nashville to negotiate with their soon to be moved law department for them to hand over their leasehold interest in a corporate air hanger at the Akron Canton Regional Airport back to the airport. You could have fired a cannon down hallways that once had thousand of workers walking them with no chance of hitting anyone since they were now in Nashville).

So who does a person call to get the irl to run at the company picnic?

Do they bring those blowup moon walks to give the kids something to do?

Englebert. Are they still around? :saywhat:

Yes, they are. Englebert and their US partner Uniroyal were absorbed by Continental in the early 80s. Engleberts are still on the racks in Europe, where things like being the last non major tire company to win a GP or the first to win LeMans without a tire change mean something. They are still tops in rain tires and M&S. Where do you think your Tiger Paws came from? ;) In the US, Englebert tires are special order items now.

Wouldn't know a Firestone from a Flintsone.

The first one is a Firestone (Dennis) and the second is a Flintstone (Fred, Bam-Bam and Wilma).

It was an earl 'sales' guy. Has to be the first thing he's ever sold anyone on relating to the 'league'.

FLUSH WITH CASH: Aaron Godnai, a national sales manager with the Indy Racing League, earned $1,000 on Saturday—but really had to work to actually pick up the cash.

Godnai spent an hour in a porta-potty in 90-plus degree heat.

What started as a joke on Thursday when Godnai asked league officials how much they would pay him to spend an hour inside on of the portable bathrooms became a challenge when league officials took up a collection and got $500—and driver Tony Kanaan added $500 of his own.

While Godnai was inside, the people outside blocked off all the vents that allowed air into the unit, but when he emerged after an hour, Kanaan presented him with the cash.

Lazier, according to the IRL reports, made it to Turn 2. I remember Stan Fox, Eddie Cheever, and a couple of others starting a wheel-to-wheel melee in Turn 1 at Indy in 1995 and ending up on the wall in the short chute. Of course, they might actually have covered a greater distance going from S/F to the wall on a 2.5 mile track than Lazier managed on that pokey little 0.75 mile oval in Richmond last night.

"Once Scott got ahead, we tried our best to pass him, but we couldn't get it done," Franchitti said. "Nobody could pass. ... Everybody was out there hanging on."

Dixon and Franchitti, teammates with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, started on the front row and stayed there all night, benefiting from a one-groove race track that made passing difficult, and from their own patience as most everyone else made green-flag pit stops.

Scott Dixon grabbed the lead from teammate Dario Franchitti in the only spot he could have -- on pit road

The result was better than the show that produced it, however, as the smallest oval in the IndyCar Series allowed for one-groove racing and almost no passing all night long.

"You just had to keep trying to follow the car in front of you," Dixon said.

Franchitti, who started first and led most of the first half of the race, found out how frustrating it had been for others to be behind Dixon.

But he knew it wasn't pretty.

"I have to apologize to the fans because that was an awful, awful race," he said.

Dario last night and Dixon a few races ago both apologized to the fans for the crap racing. Seriously. Another year with those POS and the IRL is done at the end of '10.

I heard that clip on a NASCAR oriented morning sports squawk show today.

It was followed by a paraphrase of Brian Brainfart apparently saying the IRL was working on some "tweaks" to get the cars back to racing two-wide or more again on ovals. The :gomer: will love that since it will produce more spectacular wrecks than the single car "back breaker lite" hits they've been doing a lot of this season. Too bad they've only got Kentucky, Chicagoland, Motegi, and Homestead left to wreck more Dallaras. ;)

it's just depressing to not even care. i was out all day and evening, saw the results just now and didn't give a flying f**k. there was a time when i thought that i would never not care about indycar racing. and now, i wouldn't bother with it if they ran in own backyard. sad, sad, sad.

I am the same way

I never thought there would be a time where I didnt care about "indycar" racing as we know it.

Only way I knew about the race last night, was catching the last 7 laps at the sports bar we went to for dinner, and my main reason for doing so was to watch the Mariners/Dodgers game.

Sounds like I missed nothing, and the IRL continues to swirl down the drain.

This kind of race keeps happening, and TG will have to deep six the entire thing from lack of interest. Lack of interest from fans, Lack of interest from Sponsors, Lack of interest from Media, Lack of interest from Manufacturers, and Lack of Interest of teams that maybe once thought about competing but realized the ROI is not worth a second thought.

The local weekend wrapup news broadcast this morning gave the race exactly 30 seconds more coverage than it gave Friday night's program at the 1/3 mile beater NASCAR track.

Do you think that Tony and Brainfart are bright enough or brave enough to try that? Just look at the abominable chassis regs they came up with for 2003 and will probably stick with through 2011. Any "tweaks" they come up with will just be a bandaid for the whoa! three-wide :gomer: set.

does anyone think fhonda will waste time, effort and resources to build a new engine without any competition? why will they need a new chassis then?

The only hope the IRL has for new anything is a spec that would allow for the use of unaltered LMP2 engines. No shortage of manufacturers and zero engine development costs. Just photocopy the ACO engine rules and call it done.

That just sounds too logical for any IRL exec to think of it.

How about polishing up a field of Lolas and Reynards, take some cosworth turbo lumps out of the pickle brine and going racing? Kinda retro........but I'd buy a ticket.

Exactly. They have no integrity, so they will fail to grasp the problem and they will arrive at the worst solution.

Cotman's involved with the Lights program. Probably has to earn his rep since he didn't come out of USAC. :gomer:

That's some pretty cheesey looking merchandise there. I've never been much for buying fan wear beyond the occasional golf cap but the stuff at the trailers at least used to be interesting to check out.

Not much to tell. Green flag, lap 1, Lazier bringing up the rear goes sideways through turn 1 and stuffs it in the wall. End of story.
