Lola did some fine chassis work over the years in GTP.

At some point, there was a yellow, Compuware-liveried rendering of that wind tunnel model. It looked pretty sweet, too.

[Edit] Whadd'ya know? It's amazing what the Google can do.

The Corvette GTP looked great but GM's insistence on the V6 turbo engine was not only "unCorvette" but dumb since that unit sucked as a turbo. There was one independent Corvette GTP that ran an NA V8 (don't remember who, though), but GM Motorsports treated them like an ugly stepchild.

Hendrick Motorsport switched to na V8 power in 1988. GM baled at the end of that season.
The cars were sold off.

Yeah, it was actually great for qualifying, not so good at going past half distance in the race. If the engine didn't put them out, Doc Bundy would.

I'll never forget watching that on TV. That Lyn St James walked away amazed me.

Interesting video. The first 15 seconds really shows how freaking fast those cars were and how great the racing could be. The safety crews' response with just wreckers and extinguishers makes what goes on with the IRL and NASCAR these days look ridiculous.

I've wasted a lot of hours on youtube watching races from this series. Great stuff. But yes, they did have some horrible crashes. Besides that though the racing was great, and very fun to watch.

 Damn, I miss that series. I'm still hoping that's what ALMS turns into. The Jag-----> F1 car with fenders :D

Yep, tremendous series. The Jag remains one of my favorite cars in any series.

What are all those things standing outside the guardrails 10 - 15 deep?

They started phasing those about ten years ago. Just so much extra work for the ticket takers, you know.

Now if you look at that last Grand Am race at Laguna, for example, you'll see how much more efficient everything is without all of those things standing in line waiting to give the track money.

Progress.

Autosport has some pictures of that "event" up and they're astonishing. How much longer will nascar finance that farce for no other reason than to diminish real sportscar racing? :shakehead:
