View Full Version : The Foyt Futility Watch -- Long Beach Edition

I never thought that there'd be a Futility Watch for the Long Beach Grand Prix. There probably won't be too many, though, since I think the IRL will destroy this event in just a couple of attempts to run there.

This weekend's Futility Watch anti-heroes appear in boldface.

Long Beach was a terrible CC track so it will be even worse now.

The track (75-81) did get worse as the city redeveloped the area. The original F1 circuit was much better -- the Linden Avenue section and the hairpin to hairpin run on Shoreline were great.

wasnt that when Clay Reggazoni crashed hard going into the first hairpin off shoreline and was paralyzed?
I agree that the Linden up and over to Ocean Blvd was cool...

Regazzoni's crash was in 1980 and the circuit was not changed until the first CART race in 1982 if memory serves. I was just out of college and working as a technical writer and document designer out there and was very fortunate to be able to attend the last two GPs. Missed the first CART race since I went back to the midwest to start grad school.

First Practice is over...

For comparison, Justin Wilson posted the best time in Practice 1 last year with a 1:08.286 in the DP01/Cosworth.
The Dallara/Honda's aren't even close.(But we knew that anyway.)

Practice 2 results.

RHR steps it up a touch. He must have heard about being put on the watch list.

Marko improves his time but not as much as his competitors and storms to the rear of field.

Danica, Ed and Stanton (especially Stanton) continue preparations to be the rolling chicanes on race day.

Special notes.

Out of 22 competitors, the top 15 are covered by less than one second with 3.5257 seconds being the difference between first and last.

At this point last year, out of 20 competitors, the top 13 were within one second of each other with 4.765 seconds being the difference between first and last. Damn you Juho Annala. Without him, first to last would have been 1.865 seconds.

Juho was the slowest DP01 driver with a 1:13.051. All IndyCar drivers, except Stanton Barrett, can now claim they are at least faster than the slowest DP01.

It's a slow day at work, and I'm going through LBGP withdrawl.

so has the .1RL adopted qualifying rules similar to F1? Since when does a guy 3 seconds slower get gridded ahead of people?

If I'm understanding things correctly, the entire grid is divided into two groups for qualies. After the two groups finish there sessions, the fastest twelve then go on to compete. After that session, the fastest six go on to race for the pole and the top six positions on the grid.

Entirely too complicated, in my opinion.

The Princess Permapout wins 4th place, "passing" eighteen cars by staying out longer than the leaders on a fuel stop and catching a fortuitous yellow.

#14 Vitor Meira stuffs it in the tires on the last lap. Ol' AJ's probably going to give him driving instruction with a lead mallet.

Full results when they are available from the IRL site.

The Princess Permapout wins 4th place, "passing" eighteen cars by staying out longer than the leaders on a fuel stop and catching a fortuitous yellow.

And Princess Permapout complained in her post-race interview about how the blend line location wasn't fair because it allowed Kanaan to pass her.

I heard that on WIBC. She complimented her crew for gaining 18 places for her, but was clearly disappointed that they couldn't manage to get her the next 3.

Seriously, did she pass ANYbody on the track? That's a fantastic strategy! Safe, too!:gomer:

If she did, it's probably for the first time in her non oval IRL career.

Oh, and for those of you who care, PT's answer to a question about whether or not he'd have to take the rookie/refresher test for Indy quickly replied, "No, past champions do not have to take the test." Liked that.:D

OK so I watched a few laps of this parade...basically follow the leader with an intermittent 'rookie' stuffing his ride into the tire wall. How did Danicle weasel her way up to 2nd mid-race?

For me, it's the total trainwreck factor. I can't look away knowing that something so beautiful has turned into such a hot mess.

I watched. I couldn't help but think about the article someone posted here the other day about how the Long Beach race transcends whatever series races there. In the case of the IRL it certainly is true.

It was slightly, just slightly more interesting than St Pete. As someone above mentioned, it's a parade with backmarkers hitting tire walls. Wee.

I saw a bit more on car sponsor signage, I assume most are one offs because of the Long Beach 'event'. Overhead shots of the stands looked somewhat thin.

Since when did the IRL go with 'push 2 pass'? So they have paddle shifters, p2p, option tires...if they only had a decent looking car with 2 or 3 turbo engine manufactures, we'd right back where we started from.

It's actually a decent field of drivers, I just wish the cars were designed to be more suited toward driver skill than to Danika skill.

Andretti the Lesser is still the biggest ass on the planet.

Jenson Button shows you just need to hang in there. You might get handed a car that is superior to everyone else's. :D

Yea, I hear you on that one. I joined the telecast about one hour in. I watched for maybe five minutes, then I switched to a tin-foil hat marathon on discovery - much more entartaining. The "Mayan phophecies" a great source of pure entertainment and hilarity in our house.

So I see from the discussion that Danica has racked up another crown jewel in her fourth-place trifecta. Now all that is left is fouth place in the final season standings.

Yeah, what is it with running shows like that on Discovery (or the History Channel).

As to the IRL not only do I not get the channel they are on I have never even heard of it.

I felt kinda sorry for the dozens of people that tuned in expecting to get "Tackle Box Tales" and got the EARL instead. :D

If you've never seen it "Tackle Box Tales" is where a guy takes mangy old lures out of his tackle box, talks about their history and how many <insert lie here> fish it caught then hangs it on the wall and takes out another one and talks about it...:gomer: In other words, more interesting than an EARL race.

Sound competitive with Trains and Locomotives on RFD (which I will confess to watching a bit of)

Really?

Reminds me of the old SCTV "Fishin' Musician" skit, where John Candy would talk about Hendrix for a bit, then go out on the lake and spend the rest of the day getting his lines caught in the prop, losing lures, and wondering where all the fish went.

Really. Reminded me of some kind of skit as well. The show is call "The Hunt For Big Fish." I was hoping giant squid of course, but no joy on that. :(

So after he pulls out the lures he he occasionally takes a favorite to a little black plastic tub of water and play with them. Seriously. At the end of the show he ran some footage of some jacktards standing proud with enormous muskies in their arms and it was a rap. :gomer: Coming attractions are "Mayhem in Muskieville" and "Metro Muskies." Be sure to enjoy.
