How do you misplace an offshore oil drilling unit?

I know, hurricanes are really really big, and can form/remove entire islands and such, but we're not talking about a set of carkeys here.

That's what I'm thinking. You would think there would be some type of locating device on them.

On the other hand maybe its better to lose one and rebuild with insurance money than it would to have to re-fit one due to damage.

Well, it was "submerged". The homing beacon or locater might have shorted out.

There is a new semi-submersible heading out. Supposed to be stationed off of New Orleans, La in 6000' of water. Thunderhawk - these things are HUGE!!
